    First of all Hi.
A couple of months ago I set out to get my CDL on my own, because driving schools were out of the question and my work history is far from perfect.
So studied the CDL book vigorously, went to the secretary of state expecting to fail at least once, or at least one of the tests...
And I got it, got my Combo, air brakes, and of course general knoledge.

But heres where the problems start, finding a truck to practice on has proved difficult. And alot of companies wont even look at me because im in illinois.
So my new idea was to check with small local outfits and basicly get used by them to get my license, basically bend over and take ###### wages and no home time. Or my other idea was to find an owner operator that would be willing to take me on as an apprentice. This would be my optimum plan.

Any advice for a guy in my situation?

Anyone can study the book and get a permit. What you should have done is made plans to have a truck and trailer available to practice with and get experience before going to take your road test. Friend or family member willing to add you to his insurance and risk his livelyhood to train you. Without having a vehicle available you have nothing. What you have will get you into a school, thats it. Everyone that goes to a school has to have that before they can start.

The reason companies like Swift, Werner, JB, can have driver schools is because they are self insured. They do not have to have the permission of the insurance company to put a person in their truck. Where as the "small" outfits you mention are governed by their insurance companies. Point is they can not afford you on their insurance plan. It would be impossible for you to bring in enough money to the company to pay for the insurance, wages, broken equipment and all the other things you will cost the company to make it feasible for them to hire you.

What I can suggest is for you to look into a community college that offers CDL training, as they a far less expensive. Apply for a FAFSA grant to help pay for it and check with your local Un-employment office to see if they offer any kind of assistance. My local college offers the school for 2500, and the FAFSA pays 1000 of it. Good Luck

What you should do is take the permit and throw it in the trash.. Right there you wasted your money. That permit is only good for I believe 6 months then you would be required to take it again.. I don't understand why in the world would you say going to TT School is out of the question? You obviously did not do any research into the business of driving a truck.. Most companies won't even look at you without any type of schooling. You could however go to one of the many mega outfits and get training there if you really want to drive otr.. Sure your going to have to sign a contract, and stay with them for a yr or so until it is paid off, but at least you will be driving.. You will need to keep your nose clean, no citation, accidents, and if you complete the required yr and pay off the training many doors will open for you as in better companies with better pay and benefits..
