Toll roads are one. $20 will not get you very far.
We are going to a solar max, which means the possibility of electronic networks going down will be more likely.
Your card could break, or be stolen, which would leave you with... what? $20 bucks?
A bank glitch that locks you out of your account.
I can think of many possibilities that would render a card useless.

Yes it's good to always have a stash of cash. Lost, stolen or damaged card, wide spread power outages like we just had. Imagine being stuck at some truck stop without power, fuel, cash access, food, water, etc.

I agree completely with Moose about the cash stash. After all lot lizards probably don't take plastic. To avoid the atm fees, make purchases debit with cash back when you need cash. Also open an account in a smaller local bank since most will refund any atm fees. Make sure their debit card has a Visa or Mastercard logo.

You will get by a terminal with your mentor probably within the first week if you cannot get it setup before you leave. Prepaid cards work like a debit so you can pay your bills with it at last resort. Use netspend if you go that route. At any Pilot flying J TA or Petro

Thanks for all the replies everyone! I actually got delayed at the Phoenix terminal anyhow, so I worried for nothing. Direct deposit is set up, and I should be heading out in a few hours!
inkeper Thanks this.
