"I want to try my hand as a truck driver." The experienced drivers out there read someone's post about they want to start a driving career. There are many reasons why we do. Some believe they have no other available employment options. Other's have "always wanted to drive," but either couldn't or just didn't do it in prior years. Some state "I'm going to love driving a truck; it's in my blood."
I- as a wannabe and hopefully future driver (crossing my fingers) - cannot possibly say whether I will actually like driving or not. Who can? Even those who state "driving is in my blood" even before they have gotten behind the wheel may quickly find that they absolutely hate it. Oh, I like the "solitude of driving", etc., but that is a personal vehicle and not for 500 miles a day, every day.
I've always had an interest, but never thought I'd actually make that decision to go for it. I don't have that pressure of "have to do it just to have a job," I have one. I've been content being a nurse most of my adult life, but now just down right am burned out, bored...whatever.....I just know I truly dislike what I am doing, and I do not want to spend the next 20+ years doing something I hate!
So I finally decided a while back that I want to give driving a shot. What do I have to lose? (I'll beat the jokesters to the punch and say "just my home, shirt, dog, sanity, and so one..haha)
I may find out I hate it....but....I also may discover that the job is a great fit for my personality. Notice I stated great, not perfect.
What I do know is that if I do not at least give it a shot, I will always wonder: what would it (being a driver) have been like, and why didn't I go for it?
Making money is why people work, but even so, it is not the one and only most important thing in life, at least mine. Other reasons I want to start driving:
The adventure of traveling the scenic roads and highways of the country. "Look out..... Moose!" and "Bam! Holy crap, Oh! OUCH! How many...slam...OUCH..######...EEE....potholes....UUU....crunch....are there on this....bOOM...highway?
The excitement of the job:
"Oh man, I'm so excited, my heart is pounding out of my chest!"
"Why is that driver?"
"I just about slid off that overpass and plunged to my death."
"Cool!!"
The opportunity to make a difference in the world: "yeah, you did drive 2500 actual miles, but you get paid for 2200 miles. See, driver you are making a difference out there! But Boss man, that isn't the difference I had in mind!"
The anticipation of being greeted enthusiastically by others on the road: "Hey great to see you made it early; now go sit in your truck for 7 hours until we start unloading you." "Oh well, I guess I can watch the MANSWERS marathon on the Spike Network in the meantime. Oh, no...no satellite reception?! &*&*(^$%#%!"
Meeting other drivers: I ain't got any panties on.......
Playful competition with other drivers: "You parked in that last spot that I was gonna' park in, you &*(*&)%^&*%!!
The pleasant interactions with all the fine, caring working people out on the highway: "I caught you going 5 miles over; license and logbook , please."
The good times ahead: (huh?)
The opportunities to learn a new skill: (#### truck broke down again for the fifth time this month, now I gotta try and fix it! &^&$%##!#!!)
Seeing the beautiful sites of our country: (Ahhh, isn't Gary, IN a wonderful place to visit for our January weekend vacation?! Let's come again!)
Getting a chance to enjoy the outdoors: #### heater, it's 25 degrees outside! Work...#### you...WOOOORKKK!!
.....and the satisfaction that overcomes you when you receive your company paycheck of a good week's pay for a hard weeks work: Driver, you owe us $25.00 this week!
These are all things I anticipate and am looking forward to.

I think you are thinking more realistically then other newbies. I don't see that you have much to lose. As long as you aren't hiding some from us like a wife and three kids at home or something. That might be a bump in the road. If you are laying down the facts then I personally if I were you would give it a shot. You may find you love it and way out pass your expectations! Since you have been studying the forum for some time then I guess you know what your next step is. Good luck.
