When I was growing up my father told stories of how he drove a truck for a few years. As I grew up I worked in many fields but always ended up happiest when i was driving. I have driven multitudes of vehicles and all over the south and west. I married young and did not want to be gone from my wife but after 16 years of marriage I think we can handle it. I want to drive because the road calls out to me and begs me to move around. with this job I will be able to earn more than i ever have before in all the other jobs i have had in my day. I never earned more than 25 k in a year even when working full time with overtime. and as mark twain said “Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”

NewNash...I never needed to do anything else job wise but I have 5 children well adult children, 1 office manager at a nationwide insurance company that insures the limousine industry, 1 that's a dentist, 1 attorney, 1 who owns a mortgage company and of course 1 trucker, so I am well versed on what other jobs are like.

    My BIG question was..

Why would anyone do this job for less than 1,500 a week.We made that in the 80's and 90's.You have to be NUTS..

I would never get out of bed for that kind of money..

I can not get over the FACT that Newbies and some olders work for 600.00 a WEEK..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....Desperation and Needy comes to mind...

I don't work for $600 a week but I've had my share of $600.00 weeks over the years and you have to take everything with a grain of salt. It is what it is, it's the price you pay for doing this job.

For some newbies, $600 a week is a lot of money. When I was a driver trainer,I had young men who barely made $300 a week with no promise of ever making more. I had one guy who worked at a plastics company in Dallas where he was working 15 hours a day average at piece work rates, so this was a big income boost for him.

most non owner operators will never make a lot of money and this fact is what drives a newbie to lease a truck for $375 to $500 a week payments. It's the thought if making what they perceive to be big $$$ versus being a company driver for a lot less.

So only one home eh? I own four homes and working on my fifth thanks. While I am out enjoying the US I am receiving passive income from my renters.

NewNashGuy... Did not like your response... Sound like a young ####y rookie who has enough experience to be annoying and dangerous...

No matter what new career one jumps into.. it takes a few to more years to get a good solid foundation to know if they will succeed and if it is for them...

Careful.. because humble pie is hard to swallow and digest...

I got into it because I like to drive, plain and simple.
Driving has been a 'hobby' of mine since I first got my license. Yes, I considerate a hobby.

Living in the Bay Area, CA, if time was short I would take a cruise around the bay. If I had a day or two I would head up to Tahoe, then down to Lee Vining into Yosemite and back over.
And I don't know how many times I've done a quick jaunt to Reno after work, to gamble for an hour ($20 limit) and head back for a morning shift at Magic Pan. I had a Honda CRX at the time - 52 MPG in the mid 80's. Round trip to Reno cost $10. I could have hours of driving, some gambling and food, for $40.
And I would usually come back with more than I started with. When time and cash are so short, I got in and out quickly - losing $20 or winning $200.

I got into it late in life because I usually had family that I didn't want to be away from that much.

Plus, I needed a better paying job.
    Plus, I like solitude.
Plus, it seemed like a good idea at the time. Still does.

I make a little less than $500/week after taxes, and thats another incentive to change careers. I saw somewhere the quote "I work too hard to be this poor" and I had to laugh because its so true. you waste your youth, your life, your time that could be spent with the ones you love or doing something more fullfilling, to be at this place where they work you and micromanage you until you burn out and stop being as productive as they like, then they write you up for some small things and send you packing ,only to replace you with a temp worker fresh out of college who makes $3 less and lives with their parents.Bitter much?Lol. Trucking is unique in that it offers the potential to become your own boss one day. If you really enjoy the lifestyle and decide to get a business degree you can combine a higher education with driving and have a business. if i like driving I want to do that one day ,but I gotta learn to walk before I sprint lol one step at a time.
Some corporations are just as bad as the "driver mills" of the trucking world. it seems like most industried have companies that will take advantage of those who dont seek anything further than a mediocre life.

I'm in it for the corn dogs, sweat pants and flip flops.

LMAO - I didn't realize there were "ballers" on this site with Ferraris, Learjets and waterfront mansions!

New Nash, there is a term in this business for you, its super trucker. Your too new in this business and you just begun to pay your dues. When you've driven 4 million plus miles as I have then your qualified to step up to me!!! I have 44 years of wisdom. You have a long way to go. Post something that people can actually learn from instead of showing everyone just how ignorant you are.
