I am leaving for Prime orientation on Monday. I am 21 years old, without much family, no children, and no girlfriend. Driving big equipment is something that I love. In high school, I drove Zambonis after school; then drove deicers at O'Hare, towed for a couple months, even got my pilot's license and flew for a bit in college. Trucking has always interested me and Mark Twain sums it up perfectly; if I don't give it a try, I'll never know what I missed. Now is the perfect time in my life for a major change. This isn't to say I'm just diving into the industry for the helluvit. I've spent the past six months lurking around here trying to gather as much information as I can along with figuring out which company will suit me the best. I am aware of (some of) the challenges trucking brings. Approached with a positive attitude, and it will be a piece of cake. Some of the best advice I've seen here is "you get out what you put in". I am looking forward to starting my first career; looking forward to both the challenges and rewards.
Worst case scenario, I will only be obligated for a year. I believe my cell phone contract and lease are longer than that....Nightwind8830 Thanks this. -
Hi BgRgEvan, looks like the company training is the way to get in with the least assets, drive careful and live cheap, try to save at least 50% of yer makins and plan on buying a truck when yer year is up. That is if ya like driving. I'm gonna start out as an O/O with a one ton and do some car hauling. (My brother will start driving since I don't have a CDL yet, I will get it soon thereafter) then add a semi in short order, then maybe another one ton for my cousin since he'd rather drive the smaller truck. By living super cheap and reinvesting most of the profits, fast buildup can happen. I'm almost 48 and had a lot of self employed experience already, and that's the way to scale up an operation and profits fast as possible.
