I've just very recently decided to become a truck driver. The money and benefits look good, and seems like the perfect profession to have an excuse to live out in the country (no daily commute). On top of that I'm a very private person, so i thought that would be a plus. I will be taking one of the typical 3 weeks of class then 6-8 weeks of training in which i might not be home. It's starting to really sink in, almost feels like i'm heading off to bootcamp.
So basically my question is for anyone out there who has gone this route. How was your experience with your OTR training. How exactly does that work? I literally shiver at the thought of being in a cramped cabin of a truck with some dude i don't know, and having to use the same sleeper for possibly close to 2 months.
How about the shower arrangments? Are we talking prison showers here, or locker room showers with a big room of naked truckers? Or are the shower accomadations nice, like at a gym with private stalls?
I know that the first year i will not get much time off, they state i'll be out for 10-14 days at a time, and be home about every other weekend. I'm willing to do this to pay my dues for the company since they are paying my way after all. But is it normal for them to try and get you a more local route after you've been there for that year. That is my goal.
Also what kind of amenities should i expect. They say the trucks are supposedly new. TV? Generator? Refrigerator? Are these standard and should be expected?
What kind of personal equipment do you bring of your own?
Any help with this stuff would be much appreciated, and sorry for the long list of question

The are too many variable on training with different companies and trainers within the companies . You take what you get . Good luck .
If you want TV and refrigerator it will be at your cost . You'll need an inverter . Ask the carrier about who installs inverters on their trucks . Don't try it yourself .
There are companies with local and regional runs but again it depends on the carrier and don't count on it happening after just a year . -
You have to bring anything that you would want the truck. The company furnishes you with the equipment, it is up to you to put your creature comforts in there.
I am still looking for that job that gets me home every 10 days, I guess I have not paid my dues yet. You need to do a lot more research, or you will have one rude awakening. Just because you have driven for a year does not mean that everything will change for you. Doors will not magically open with new opportunities, you won't all of a sudden get all the gravy runs.
The company is in business to get freight moved. It is up to you to move it. -
its all a fantasy in his mind.....good luck with all that.let me no if you last 3 months..with the trucking mills...

The showers aren't that bad out here. Just ask for two towels, I hate those paper shower mats, if there are any.
About all you will need are a couple of weeks of socks and underwear. And a weeks worth of clothing, some warm winter gear and a bed roll. I always used a sleeping bag and a pillow, roll it out, roll it up.
Bring your shaving kit, and run up to WalMart and get a pair of shower shoes or flip flops. You will need these! Do not leave without them! A case of athletes foot can really mess you up out here.
That would be about it for me.
As far as the rest. The company will put you in a truck with a steering wheel and am/fm radio. The rest is up to you.

AND DON'T FORGET THE SHOWER SHOES!!!!! -
I'm a ex trainer and I'll say this if you get a good trainer then you will be in a clean truck. most of them can teach you alot. but if you go to one of theses co. that let a driver that only has 1yr or less train you good luck! and as far as your time out 10 to 14 days out is good any less is great but otr means over the road not local. so if you want to be home every week good luck making any money! if your that shy that it makes you shiver sharing a truck with a trainer than stay home! don't get in a truck.
in trucking otr you give up a lot. faimly, friends, time to do stuff you want. but if you have a goal to drive for x amont of years. then get something local because every thing you have is payed off and you don't have to make as much money then put your fears behide you and make it happen!
and as far as whats in the truck lights a bed and every thing you need to make that truck go down the road every thing else is up to you! like cb,tv,ref. blankets pilow.
but if I can tell you one thing you need to keep in your mind it is this!
you can take a corner 1000 times to slow but only once to fast. GOOD LUCK!!! -
Showers vary from places you wouldn't dare take your clothes off to really nice (Mittens TA in Oakley KS) - it just depends. $10 is the rule unless you and your trainer stop at a place you have a shower credit at... he'll redeem a credit and ask for a team shower... that's in separate showers!
Shower flip-flops are a must!
Take your personal hygiene stuff, enough clothes to last a week or two (extra underwear and socks are a must), something to keep you occupied when you're not driving or sleeping, cold weather clothes, and a change of shoes. Remember, you will be in snow one day, and perhaps 80 degrees the next. Sleeping bag and pillow... easiest way to deal with hot-bunking in the sleeper. A cell phone with national service will keep you connected. Some extra cash.
Shower flip-flops are a must!
Don't bring a ton of stuff while you are training. Just enough to last the training period, and keep you sane during that time. Once you get your own truck, you can do the extra stuff like TVs, fridges, microwaves. Remember, while you are training, you will be living in your trainers "home." Be a considerate guest.
Did I mention that shower flip-flops are a must?rswinnerton and Desiredname Thank this. -
I took my girl friend out to Vegas once in the truck. My gift to her was a pair of shower shoes! She married me a few days later.
Mike1pissedoffdriver Thanks this.
