the reason for the change was two fold.
1st was ride quality.. hoods ride better
2nd was a change in overall truck length laws

    Knucklehead and rbrtwbstr Thank this.

I’ve driven a lot of Cabovers in my nearly 38 years of driving commercially. Started out with a 1973 K model Kenworth in the 80’s, drove a 1976 352 Patriot Peterbilt, 1983 362 Peterbilt, 1978 K model Aerodyne, 1980 Freightliner, 1972 Freightliner, 1981 Freightliner, 1974 Freightliner with air assist steering, 1987 & a 1988 K model Kenworth, 1979 IH Transtar ll.

For those curious about driving a Cabover, lay down in the floor and shuck your britches off and take a nap. Then while laying on the floor shuck your britches on, climb over the coffee table and go on your way.

Most comfortable for getting dressed are the Aerodyne KW’s, ran the maroon / silver pictured below from WV to Texas every week, it too had no power steering as did my 73 model I bought in 1987.

They do ride rougher, but I’m sure modern models have possibly improved.

Many say the Cabovers had more blind spots, and they are correct for the most part.

When steer’n & gear’n a Cabover you pretty much feel like you’re setting on the white line….

I had a '86 9670 that was made into a straight truck. It was fun to drive.

Drove a 2000 Argosy straight truck for awhile. Handled like a dream. Comfortable as all getout. I miss expediting with those trucks; particularly the Argosy!

A lot of those Euro engines over here in ag and construction equipment. No EGR, no VGT. Just an SCR system, although the new Stage 5 stuff has a DPF type unit in front of the SCR that has a regen interval at something like 4,000 hours IIRC.

I started Expediting in a stretched Columbia with 10 speed auto then went into a 9400 International with an Eaton 10 that was fun as heck to drive, moved on to a Freightliner M2112 hated that truck and when I became an Ownerop I bought a 2016 Cascadia with the DT12 transmission, I absolutely love this truck.

my 2019 MX13 went 550K with nothing but very minor stuff. My 2024 has been to the dealer 12 times for injector issues until they finally put 6 of the new updated versions in. 40K PSI injector pressure is doing weird things.

Unless I’m misunderstanding, the Scania motor is coming to the US as the new International engine.

It’s a nightmare. Flush, flush, flush!!! Open a case with Paccar, wait to hear back, blah blah blah. Maybe, finally replace some or all. I never should have taken the 4 I have and will certainly never own a Paccar again. You’ll also be getting a recall soon to check the crankshaft. Another trip to the shop!

I cant speak for other MX engines. But mine over the years i owned it was a total peice of crap. Sure it got to 1 million before it launched the head into orbit.....almost literally. But i replaced #### near every single ####ing thing attached to that truck at least twice. No really i have a file of repairs on that truck that is almost 19 inches thick. 74 repairs to the drive train of that truck over 4 years with a net total cost of $138,000 counting tows, hotels and downtime estimates. And that was JUST the motor.

I would not wish a paccar engine on my worst ####ing enemy.

European cab overs are hideous looking. It’s bad enough we have all those fugly sprinters, and transit vans running around like we are part of the eu. We don’t need any more of that.
