One trucker posted he owes $20G in taxes because he thought he wouldn't be caught doing 1099 and cheating on it.

Most of the YouTube truckers that start posting & are 1099 spend their first year on YT putting up videos showing them living & earning like a pimp and then they disappear within 12 months as they discover they owes taxes. They don't stick around and post videos about that.

1099 isn't always a bad deal, as long as you are compensated enough to exceed the extra tax burden and headache. BUT, as a new driver, I'd advise sticking with a reputable W2 carrier. As a new driver, you won't know what is/isn't normal, and a possibly (probably) shady 1099 gig might take advantage of that.

Save yourself the headache and stress and just make your first year about learning and gaining experience. The money will come later

The mega carriers get a lot of hate, but they are the safest way to break into trucking. The pay is less than stellar, but it's only 6 months to a year of it.

Honestly I can't find anything saying paying taxes on earned wages is legal. My thought. There are many other types of taxes I know.

    Pay attention to Ridgeline's post.

The greater percentage of companies using 1099 don't bother with such necessities as a contract; Ridgeline is an exception.

Makes things easy for them to heap any and all abuse on you the newly minted CDL who does not really understand the business.

Being a CONTRACTor without a contract means you have no legal standing, most things will be their way or the highway.

A few states [mostly budget hungry ones like Cali and NJ] are starting to prosecute employers they feel are using employees misclassified as independent contractors looking for back unemployment and worker compensation fund taxes.

Heed the advice you have been given by a bunch of people who don't want you to have a bad start.

    Bean Jr. Thanks this.
