I'm a former driver who's returned to trucking about 7 months ago. I tried to set everything up in advance to going back on the road so I wouldn't have any problems. I'm using a friend's address as I don't have a 'home' (since it would be ridiculous to pay for that if I can only be there a couple of days a month). I had remembered from before that there are periodic problems when you don't receive your mail. But this time I really got caught up in a nightmare.

I went online to renew my car registration - even though my car has been parked at the terminal for months unused. Well I was shocked to find out that my license is in the process of being revoked! Before I went back OTR, I thought I had renewed my auto insurance for a whole year, but it turns out it was just six months. Consequently, it's lapsed for over a month and I am in deep sh#t. Not sure if I am going to lose my job or what. I'm trying to resolve everything over the phone but it's almost impossible to reach some of these agencies like Florida Motor Vehicles Dept.

In the past, I had considered using one of those mail services like Earth Class Mail, but never did because it seems like just another element that could get messed up and cause even more mail to be lost/misplaced. Have any of you guys had similar problems arise because of not receiving mail? I've been paranoid about those red light cameras and other traffic cameras because I would never see any of those tickets either. I had told my friend to notify me if any 'official' looking mail arrives, but he's been too busy with other stuff.

I don't know if this is true or not; but I've read several articles that say traffic light camera tickets can't be enforced & if you get one in the mail, just throw it away. Is anyone else familiar with this? Haven't used Google to research it yet.

My suggestion driver is talk to your employer and ask some one that you can "trust" at your company (such as a log auditor or maybe your dispatcher even) to accept your mail. Have your mail sent to their address and make sure the office knows of this. I use to drive for a company out of Minnesota and have medications that I need sent to my dispatcher via UPS. She knew it was coming and agreed to accept them. When I came back to the office she had them under her desk and handed them to me...thus problem solved.

Does anyone know if insurance lapsing puts points on your record? I can't reach the Florida DMV on the phone because each time it says they are too busy. I can't believe my whole career may be put in jeopardy because of such a ridiculous thing.

Just get the insurance back in force as quickly as possible - that way the DMV computer picks up the fact that the car is insured which is one of the main things they are looking for. No points should show on your MVR for this - it may say license suspended - no insurance or something to that effect. More than likely you would then need to explain it to the safety manager, etc... If you get it taken care of rather quickly it may not show anything at all.

Houston had red light cameras for awhile. They were voted out and shut down.

A red light camera ticket is a civil fine only. Since an officer isn't issuing it, the ticket is not a moving violation.

The fine is usually $75. If you don't pay, it becomes a civil matter only.

It won't put points on you, but if you dont resolve it quickly you will show a license suspension on your MVR. BTDT. Had a car I wasnt driving because it was broke down, insurance lapsed and I thought it was no big deal til I got a letter saying I either needed to turn in my plates or proof of insurance or they would suspend my license, lol.

That is the wonder of the "no fault" states like Florida.

I dont know about Florida, but here in Maryland if you do not turn in your tags 24 hours after your insurance ends, you are fined $150. & $5 A day until your tags are turned in! & they will keep you from renewing your drivers license!
