As an owner operator I believe you have to lease to Grocery Haulers or NTS (not sure of the second one). I'm thinking they are a Teamsters shop, and they primarily run out of Keasbey NJ, Covington PA, Breinigsville PA and Carteret NJ. I am also under the impression that they're hard to get on with... Helps to know someone.
I'm not leased to them, obviously. Just go to a bunch of the same places and have chatted with them here and there.DocWatson Thanks this. -
Years ago, I worked for a company near mountain top, pa called versa cold. I don't remember if owner operators pulled for.them. They handled the refrigerated freight.
But if I remember correctly, "wakefern distribution" is the company that you would find to get hooked up as an owner operator. I am sure they can answer any questions that you have.
I remember that it seemed like the owner operators got in and out pretty quickly. I also remember something about having to pull ome trailer out to put your own in, but I don't think the o/o had to do that.
Fwiw, it seemed like a pretty good gig for the o/ops. Good luck. -
Wakefern is the name of the outfit that runs the grocery warehouses. Not sure if they handle the transportation side or not. I'm sure they could put you in touch with whoever does, though.

I think it's two or three different outfits that pull out of wakefern.... I can't remember the names on the doors as I haven't ran north of exit 7 on the NJ Pike in a year, but I know them O/O's had some good looking trucks, mainly 379 Pete's

Years ago when I went to work for them almost directly bypassing other companies/ brokers. This was when I pulled liquid asphalt and it was a good gig till winter when it went dead. The company I was leased with gave loads, but not many, like one a week, but i purchased fuel for wholesale price and had no payments. One of my friends at this company worked for shop rite and had contacts with them. One night I went with him and that was my first and last day on the job. They changed my load four times before I even left the yard and I left without pulling a single load. Each change was worse than the last. Yes they are a good company for owner operators, but that experience turned me away. I also heard a few years ago that a lot of o/o's from upstate NY left because pay dropped. They repainted their trucks and went to work for mystic/anchor. Ten fifteen years ago I remember that they paid well enough drivers would change trucks every two three years.

Digging up the dead. I go to the gym with a shoprite driver. Hes been oulling out of dayton wakefern. From what he told me they used to hire casuals. Now if youre lucky u can get hired outrite for NTS. national transportation services. Starting pay is 18.50 which blows. But if u hang with it by year 5 you hit union scale which is 30.00 per hour 45 per hour after 40. Triple time on holidays. Split scedules, new guys usually eat ####. They just upgraded to a whole new cascadia fleet and dumped there old macks. You may run 1 load out to eastetn conneticut or rhode island or 2 loads or 2 split loads. They love drivers who will work 70

You wanna drive for them? Or your a O/O with your own authority looking to haul for wakefern?
Getting a driving job there is very difficult, not impossible, but near impossible if your just walking in off the street. Leasing your equipment on is much easier, you will get the lowman on totem pole treatment for approx. 2 yrs. if you keep your truck cleaned and polished, plus you don’t complain everyday about the runs your getting then you will make decent money for the amount of work you and your truck put in. -
When you go to sign on with us please send a picture of your tractor, no trailer required, Chicken lights and chrome are. FYI there are a few slots open at this current time.

"Decent money". Got actual numbers to go with that? Dollars and miles?
