No CDL...gooseneck anyone cited over 26K?

    I believe that is to which he refers. You can order a trailer and have the data plate de-rated at the factory. Its quite common on trailers that have a pair of 5200 lb axles for the manufacturer to de-rate them to 9990 GVWR in order to avoid the CDL Nazis in CA and other places. In reality the axles are rated at 10,400, and the trailer is safe at over 11,000 lbs (with tongue weight factored in), but the data plate and MSO state 9990, therefore the states title them at 9990, and the DOT recognizes them as 9990... just don't load them to their actual capacity, keep them under 9990 and you'll be fine.

    Correct. Lots of people though mistakenly buy a trailer like you listed above that is listed at 10,400 from the factory on the VIN tag and think they can just walk into the tax office and make it 9,990.
