Not necessarily. In my experience a competent lawyer is not going to suggest a not guilty plea if there is a very high likelihood of the Crown getting a conviction. First they will have to wade through the disclosure and see what kind of case the Crown has. If the lawyer determines the Crown is very likely to get a conviction they will try and work out a plea deal. Which the Crown may or may not agree to. Ultimately it is the accused's choice, regardless of what their lawyer suggests or the Crown agrees to. So, even at the last moment, regardless of any agreed upon plea, the accused can elect to plead not guilty.

Would be nice if the driver told the real story, as to why (with a Bachelors Degree in Finance) he was even driving a truck to begin with? Was he financially pressured into driving to pay back personal loans? I don't know. A full public disclosure into the owner's Federal taxes (employee expenses included) might shed light on whether the driver was being used as "slave labor" to pay back money. Thus, the hurried approach towards his "training". It would also be nice to know... who was the Alberta Government examiner, that passed him on his road test. If they could prove he "bought" his licence… well that just opens a new can of worms. HEADLINE: Government Corruption Involving Class 1A Licences In Alberta.

I drove past the crash site on Thursday. Not a pleasant place to be, especially as a truck driver.
