Today i am headed to pick up at a Shipper that i know loads heavy it will around my 10th time there over the course of a year... Now I have according to the State been running Illegal when i leave there (not that i have been caught)
So out of Curiosity i Called the DOT and Asked them "Hey i am going to this shipper and there is a Truck Stop 5 miles away and i know its going to be a heavy load but there is a Scale House between me and the truck stop Will I be ticketed if i happen to be overweight on a particular Axle even though i am just leaving the Shipper to Go directly to the Truck Stop to Weigh my load" and DOT's Response was Probably it Depends on how the Officer wants to handle you but most likely you will be ticketed for being over weight".......So i asked to Clarify but i am Going to Weigh directly from the shipper so i can be legal if i am not, how can i be ticketed for this?" and She said well thats the rules your overweight so your getting a Ticket!"
So i hung up and i guess the State prefers me to Drive 37 miles in the opposite Direction to the nearest Truck stop to weigh my truck... I called OOIDA and Asked them about it and they told me the same thing...
HOW Can that be? I'm getting Ticketed for doing the Right Thing but its ok to do the wrong thing, I wish that this was federally Regulated and there was a CLEAR YES OR NO ANSWER and if the answer is "YES you will be" it should be Amended to Prevent "THEFT" of my hard earned money from the state for Something i couldn't prevent! how do i know i don't have the GIFT to Predict Axle Weights!
And how can i be subject to the Whims of another Person i know that the law is enforced according to how the officer perceives it but this Situation is a no brainier!!! i should be allowed to Weigh My truck and become legal and if not be allowed back to get the load Reworked! or if they don't like that they should Ticket the Shipper! simple as that its not my Fault YET! i didn't choose to run that way!![]()

too bad that you can not legaly go arround the scale house
.
But I would not bust my rear to go over to the scale house if there was another way you could take to the closest truck stop.
I can not legaly tell you to go arround but I would make it so I do not go through that scale house if I thought that I was overweight.
Maybe the shipper needs to get a scale for their loads at the warehouse.
If you owned the truck and trailer I would get the onboard scale.
I do not know if there are any that you can use without any mods to the trailer or the truck but I would look for one that requires no mods. Chances are if you are over weight with the onboard scale it will probaly be overwieght at the scale house. -
Here's an idea. Try calling the scalehouse directly and explain the situation. They might cut you some slack or let you weigh there and then let you go back if your over with some sort of proof if you are overweight.
-
I suppose that will work if the scale house opperator is not a jerk and willing to let you weigh there to check for possible overweight with out giving you a ticket.
But just make sure that he/she is on duty every time before going there or make sure that the person running the scale house is willing to do the same thing. -
Good suggestion, it is possible that if this shipper has been there for a while and no one has whizzed in the chicken house operator's wheaties lately they will show some leniency.
How ever if it was most any of the jack ##### from the US 85 scale south of Cheyenne WY they would bend you over and screw you with a smile. Thats where the rejects go, and they have a chip on their shoulders with some to try and prove. -
For Example picking up Alcohol from Hayward, CA i always took the chance and hoped i got the green light and went to Tracy, CA to weigh at the Flying J and the weight was always different,
The place i am Referring to in the original Post is Kik international in Salem, VA, I-81 exit 137, they load Great Value Bleach out of there, i always go to the Truck stop in Dublin, VA -
TJ, are their loads really jacked up, meaing they distribute the weight strangely? Because I have picked up heavy loads and had to cross a chicken house b4 getting to scale, but I guess I got my tandem setting close, 'cause I have never had a problem.
Just remember, set your tandems under the very end of the load, and you SHOULD be ok. And if all else fails, just run around the troutville chicken house (that's the one I assume you're referring to), you take US11 (I memory serves) and it spits you out next to the dumpy T/A and the joke of a Peelot. -
Try this # if you have a cell phone. 1-800-373-3411, Supposely it doesn't cost as much or anything as many Cell Phone Companies charge for a 411 call. I wouldn't know since I haven't used it yet. If one doesn,t have a cell phone look in the MC road atlas. They have the state's main highway patrol number and probalby can get the number. The biggest problem I see is like you said is the scale operator may be a butthead.

It is free if you use the 1800 number, no charge so Tyra Banks says!
This applies to any phone you use dial that number and you do not get charged! FREEEEEEEEEEEEE EVERYONE READDDDDDDDD FREEEEEEE something in life is freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
