I am looking at going OTR with Roehl Transport. I noticed that they do not have any terminals or drop yards in southeast Michigan (metro Detroit area)
Do they have runs in southeast Michigan?
I guess what I am asking is, if a company doesn't have a terminal in your hometown, would it be an issue getting home to that area?
Any help would be great!!
No company terminals = no hometime?

I have wanted to ask that question, too.

Puppage,
I just don't want to hire on with a company, and not be able (or have a difficult time) getting home!
Who are you looking to OTR with? Are you in school still?
I have been looking at this forum for a while now. (couple years) I have learned so much from reading these posts! Very informative posts about do's and don'ts. Who to stay away from etc...
Hope you are doing well! -
No, you will still get your home time at the Company's convenience. You will how ever, have to wait for them to do their maintenance on the trucks at their terminal.

Personally I will not work for a company with a yard more then an hour from home, makes things much simpler.
airforcetoo Thanks this. -
It makes sense, doesn't it? When I was narrowing my list of companies, I threw out any that did not have a terminal in Phoenix for this reason. It definitely makes sense that we're more likely to get home now and then, without being a pain in our FM/DM's arse, if the company has a terminal near our home. I also understand that some companies allow its drivers to bobtail home from the terminal (reasonable distance) and others do not.
These are a couple of the reasons that Roehl ended up at the top of my list. -
not that I have extensive expertise ~ I can tell any and all that the absence of a terminal within 100 air miles of home and / or other factors that one would think would be related will not have as much of a determining influence on "home-time" as will other issues in the matter - I would first look at whether it is big enough to have dedicated dispatchers & exactly how far the nearest yard is from your home but for what it is worth
I am talking to FFE right now and for 21/3 I do not see much point in being concerned about home-time = it is a big issue for most but why get into trucking and go OTR when one can run regional or even bobtail local [ sometimes called straight truck ] <<== do that and you will be home often enough for most
(edit - just found on job board)

You all pretty much said what I expected. I agree, it makes sense to go with a company that has locations near home.
Thanks for the input! -

New drivers should be less concerned with hometime and more focused on learning and earning. If you haven't even started yet and youre already worried about getting home, chances are you won't make it past the first month. I spent 60 plus days without getting home when I first started. By the time I came back I'd forgotten what home even looked like.
Truthfully though my home was 400 miles from the closest company terminal so really I had no choice but to get used to not getting home...TRKRSHONEY, nicholas_jordan and scottied67 Thank this.
