Every truck co. does it different. They have "lanes" that they run almost always. It's better if you live along one of those "lanes", so you'll get by the house. Here's the problem that a lot of drivers encounter. The co's lane for instance is I-80 and the driver lives 200 miles north of I-80. So, the co. has to perform a miracle to get that driver home. Also, consider your truck when at home...unless you can park in your driveway, you'll be worried about the truck un-attended sitting behind the abandoned K-mart or wherever you have it parked.

Do you have room to park a truck, and or trailer at your home? Home time should not be a problem if you do.

Others say they leave them at a walmart, but I am responsible for the truck when it is not at a secure terminal or customer yard. I would never leave it in a parking lot. Most our stolen truck alerts are from states near mexico, but I won't risk it still...

I am home nightly so I rent a spot that I can park the truck, no room for trailer.

as for service, PM (principal maintenance, oil, filters, lubes etc...) can be done at truck stops. Major work is done at the dealer since all our company trucks are under warranty. Surely there is a dealer near you. If you are lucky enough to break down when near home.

First off home is the reason for the job, not the other way around. If they can not get me home when I want I will not work for them, If the truck does not go home with me I will not work for them.

And you always have a choice. You are doing them a favor not the other way around. You are making the company money and profit. If they do not see it that way you work for the wrong company. Never believe you do not have a choice.

If the truckstop approves it none of your business. They need the spot as much as you, there first come first serve.

Absolutely. My son was born six days after I came back from my first 66 days out. I wouldn't miss it for the world and although it took some push on my part they got me back in time. I completely understand when a driver NEEDS to get back for something critical. It's the new drivers who can't quite grasp the concept of Over The Road that leave me scratching my head. I remember watching guys get there CDLs and then quit, day one and four thousand dollars later, cause they didn't realize that they wouldn't be going home to mommy or wifey later that night...

You have the luxury of making such demands, Mr. 30 years OTR. Joe Blow, the student driver over at CRE or Swift, does not. I remember the first time I drove thru New Jersey. I remember my trainer telling me as soon as I got a few months under my belt I could tell dispatch to shove those east coast loads where the sun don't shine. Those months couldn't fly by fast enough...

A buddy of mine drives for rohel. He lives up by Albany NY and the closest terminal is Gary Indiana. That's about 13 hours away or so from his home and he goes home every 2 weeks with no problems at all. Rohel is extemely good with home time and I kick myself in the ### everytime I have to argue and fight to get home after being out for a month!! I don't like to jump jobs so I'm sticking it out where I am for now but if I could do it all over again I would have gone with rohel over USX. I always seem to have trouble getting home and have to remind my FM each day for a week and a half that I'm going home on a certain date. And when I'm about 2 days away from home time is when the real battle starts when they try planning me in the wrong direction. I talk to my buddy all the time and he NEVER has to remind his FM or fight for home time. He tells me that when he's about 3-4 days away his FM says "ok looks like your due for home time in a couple days so I will get you a load headed home". Simple as that!! Drives me nuts that it's so easy for him!

As for taking the truck home rohel let's you take the truck home. If you can't park it at home find a nearby truck stop or Walmart or some other place big enough to park off out of the way and ask a manager if it's ok to park there for however long. Always get name of the manager and give them your phone number in case they need it moved or have a problem. Let your company know where it's being parked as well. Hope this helps

Living in Michigan you could be home very often. Roehl runs all over the place. I take my truck home with me. Just because a company doesn't have a terminal or drop yard near you DOES NOT mean you won't get home.

Roehl does have one of the best hometime setups for being otr.
