Be more specific. a Dewars bottle of liqiid N2 could be considered under 'materials of trade'...

    I call bahookey.
Nitrogen is class 2 hazmat, whether it’s in cylinders or bulk trailer compressed or liquid.
You need the hazmat endorsement to pull it.
    And tank if it’s bulk.
I promise you don’t want to get caught pulling it without.
You’ll have more DOT attention in one day than anyone should have in a lifetime.
    Be safe out there.

I've hauled liquid O2, nitrogen, argon and CO2 along with compressed gases in tube trailers and cylinders.
As far as I know you have to have a Hazmat endorsement to haul any amount of hazardous materials.

You would be wrong on that.
It depends on the class. Some are 1,000 lbs or more for example.

I thought that was the amount that requires placards.

Basically if it doesn't require placards it doesn't require a hazmat endorsement. That's not 100% universal I think, but generally speaking.

One of the major oilfield service companies is shipping 2200 gallon bulk tanks. ( The kind you see on rail cars) on drivers with NO has-mat endorsement on their CDL. They still have the BOL with all the required paperwork. Panel placards on the tanks.
This has been going on for the last month here.
No one can produce the change in transportation rules .

May also depend on the size of the containers....

Ex: 5300 gallons of 120 proof alcohol. In a tanker requires hazmat and placards, but in 53 gallon casks in a van or reefer no hazmat or placards required.

If the tanks have labels or placards then the drivers should have the endorsement.

Also, I can't imagine why an oilfield services company would hire somebody who doesn't have the endorsement in the first place. It really limits what you can do.
