Just putting this out there. Has anyone sold off their assets such as cars, computers, etc for extra cash to pursue their trucking career? I'm thinking about selling my cars for extra cash when i leave for trucking school. Is this a good idea?

Also, where does one usually live while on the road? I mean, if you come back to drop the truck off at the company terminal, how do you get back home? Just call for a cab? What if you don't have a home, do you sleep in the truck at the terminal? Sleep at a hotel on your days off then go back to work? Do most companies let you park a car at the terminal?

    Thank you.

I like hotels and rental cars. If you don't have rent, mortgage, or car payments/insurance to pay you can afford to get them a few times a month and be money ahead.

How you get from the terminal to your house is on you. 99% of the time, you're living in your truck. The times you can't access it (like, in the shop etc) it's motel time or some companies have bunk rooms at their terminals. And trust me, you don't want that.......

A few people on here have sold everything and done this. One friend of mine lived in his pickup truck with a camper shell on it; he could have done better, but that's what he liked. Most OTR companies you can live in your truck & some have bunkhouses. You can definitely put more money in the bank and 401K by being frugal.

I've met drivers who have homes, and families, but stay out for 4-6 months at a time. I ask them why, and they say because that's the only way he can pay his bills. I'm guessing he had lot's of kids and bills not necessary.

So I'm sure if you wanna stay out forever, and take your off time on the road, the company will gladly let you. Good luck.

Not every company makes you drop the truck at a terminal. You can take time off anywhere you want. Grab a hotel room, cheap rental car and have fun.

Thanks for the quick replies everyone. If you sleep in the truck at the company terminal, wont they tell you to get out since they need that truck for the next driver?

While we are on the subject, and i dont want to create multiple threads, i'll just post my next questions here.

    1. What is up with Florida? I keep hearing about it everywhere. My cousin told me that companies dont send new hires to Florida because they dont come back. When i was doing research, 99% of companies dont hire out of Florida, why is this? What is going on down there? Is it THAT bad down there?

    2. Also, is it THAT bad in New York? Is it just the traffic? I did hear on the news that thieves stealing from trucks is a problem up there. Is this all true?

Companies don't hire drivers out of Florida because they can't give them home time. Florida is a dead freight area, you can get loads going in but other than seasonal produce there isn't much coming back out. I think your cousin is full of it, they'll send you there if they have a good enough paying load or account just like any other load.

New York City is that bad. Even the upper east coast from D.C. up to Boston you have to be careful and make sure you have good directions because they have a lot of restricted roadway's that don't allow trucks, lot's of low overpasses, etc... and lot's of traffic.
