I had no pre-hires. None. I didn't know anything about them. We had lots of recruiters come through. No one was interested. I could not figure out why. After all, I am a multi-millionaire, everyone loves rich bankers right? I am a smart a s s . The instructors loved pointing that out. A PhD is a good thing to have when driving a truck, I have one of those. I also had a beard, that ruled out Gully Transportation. Everyone in the area knows me because of political things. I should have been snapped up. Oh, there was the fact that I was on parole from Prison. And there was the one recruiters wife who showed me lots of attention. Bottom line you are in better shape then I was.
I did the craigslist thing. I found a Fed Ex contractor that wanted me. But Fed Ex had me go through the appeal process with their company because of the felony. That took to long. I was cleared but already employed somewhere else. I worked a week driving for a temp agency hauling roofing supplies. That was fun. And then I got my first job. I ran over every small tree and sign in the state of Kansas. I totaled a truck. I hit another trailer during a road test with a company. I ran over a fire hydrant and while I was directing traffic I caused three cars to pile up. I had a customer complain about my backing taking an hour and me tying up his dock all day. (I was fired for that). I failed to collect for a COD delivery and the company never got paid. I hauled a load that never had bills for it. It was unloaded and moved on before we ever had proof we did anything. No pay for that one either. I failed a company physical. I scraped up a trainers truck (you have to really work to see the scrape but it is there). I hit my head on the bottom of a train and had a concussion. I tried to drive after the concussion and totaled my second trailer. All in all, I am the biggest screw up in the trucking industry. I do not have the pressure of ever having to work again so I have no problem applying for jobs that are going to turn me down. I just don't care. I am relaxed.
Since I graduated from Fort Scott Community College's driving school in 2005, I have be out of a truck driving job for exact 2 months. That was waiting to get my blood sugar down so I could pass the physical. There are too many companies out there that will hire you to let one get discouraged. I make 45 cents a mile and drive 3800 miles every week. I sleep in my own bed. With my own beagle. I do not suffer fools well.
And I have only had two post censored on this site. One pulled down. Do not let anything or anyone keep you from success. Remember the only one who really knows you are an idiot is yourself.
No luck with landing a job?

I think that big training companies are where the majority of all truck drivers get their first experience. Actually, if you think of it, they are more used to new truck drivers than are those companies who hire from experienced drivers. I really think that you (or anyone -- like me) ought to think in terms of "school" then a "working apprenticeship" at a training company. In other words, cool out. The first year or two are for learning. Then, like the spawning salmon, you try not to get eaten on your way up to "veteran trucker."

Another thought is you might go to one of these companies that sent you a pre-hire and after the training is over with you might find that you like this particular company and stay there for longer than expected. Just because someone else doesn't like them you might like them. It is all how you make it take some of the advice but if you listened to every person who hated a company for whatever reason there would be no truck drivers. Just my opinion. Hope you enjoy the ride.

You have 2 companies what others said except wooly, and that just because he pissed me off, you should listen to it is very good advice. Go with one that gave you the prehire, get some time in you can always continue your search while driving and getting some OTR experience.

Go with Werners reefer division, since you got a prehire from them. 6 months experiece and you can move on. Ignore the badmouthing on here about any company and ask yourself, if it's so bad, why do they work there? Also, do the online applications now, while you're still "recent grad." Many companies will be happy to hire you.
Online applications here also:
drive4marten.com
Navajo.com
Some websites will have, "1 year experience" or "6 mos. experience", but look carefully, and it may also say,"recent driving school grads."Last edited: Oct 16, 2012
