After reading this I got to thinking that a mfg. would want to sell the rental guys the very best, or at least middle/top end of things as it would serve as a good test drive for future sales.
Am sure it is like anything else though with Penske or Ryder & the mfg making the cheapest possible truck to get the deal inked.
No new trucks for me!!

I drove a 9400i for most of this year befor I had enough and quit. Im 6'4'' and I agree about no leg room, any time I had to clutch my knee was against the back of the steering wheel and the cup holder is so close to your right leg theres no where to rest it. I literally had a bruise on my leg from where the cup holder rubbed against it every day. With the seat at the lowest postion I was still staring into the cubby hole. What pissed me off the most about them trucks were the steps. Both are narrow as can be and the bottom one isnt even set out farther than the top one like a normal step. I cant tell you how many times last winter or any rainy day this summer that I slipped and fell off that truck. I could go on but ill end it there.

The simple answer is "Don't run Cali"...Well...it's not so simple...
All of those anti-idling laws everyone whines about...all started in Cali....Don't be surprised that by '20...you can't run anything older than a '10... -

That's fine. I won't have to own it. I may drive one, but I ain't owning one of those until they get them straight. I'm NOT paying for the repairs on one of those abortions of a truck.
I know two guys who have new trucks with DPF's on them. Both are '09's (one is a Volvo and One is a KW) and BOTH spent at least 7 weeks in 09 and 5 weeks in 2010 (so far) in the shop. Every time was for that stupid DPF or EGR problems. The only exception was the last time when the Volvo needed new injector cups after 230,000 or so.
My old '96? It's in the shop right now to have the overheads run. That's it. They really like calling me to ask if I can bring my '96 out to take their trailers home so they don't have to have them towed, just like their trucks. I feel bad for them because they're both good guys and really thought they were doing the right thing by upgrading their trucks.
Me? Hell, I'll buy some kind of trailer and run around here. I don't see that kind of regulation coming here for a very long time. I don't care about going out west, anymore. I don't go to Cali, anyway. I don't go anywhere that doesn't recognize my handgun permit. Stopped doing that a long time ago. That pretty much takes I-5 off my map.bullhaulerswife and josh.c Thank this. -

Just say NO to tupperware! LOL
Yup, we are going to run this FLD till we can't run her anymore. -
James Hebe, the former president and CEO of Freightliner senior vp of North American sales operations for Navistar, has been on record predicting the death of O/Os and the end of "long and tall trucks".
As I've said before, Hebe can keep selling a plastic piece of sheyat, and we'll keep buying Petes and KWs. We'll still be around long after he's gone.
Any kid out there contiplating a future line of work should consider becoming a tech for navistar, as it sounds like there will be alot of job security having the pro stars lined up outside the shop daily.josh.c, outerspacehillbilly and Working Class Patriot Thank this. -
This is so true. He's doing the same thing he did at Freightliner 10 years ago with the Century. Now its the Prostar fleets are buying in droves and the dealer service departments are overwhelmed.
Two out of ten Prostars we just bought came back on a hook the first week they were put in service. Others with less than 6,000 miles need to go in for warranty work, International can't get'em in for 2 weeks. These trucks are absolute garbage. -
Of all the ones our fleet took delivery of so far; all of them are 2000+ pounds heavier than the 9400's they are to replace. Full aluminum wheels don't help, deleting cargo pump don't help. I agree they are a POS excuse for a truck. Dang people are trying to design cars fer pete's sake.
