E-logs are the electronic version of logs that allow drivers using them to spout holier than thou remarks at the outlaw rebel drivers still on paper in one thread and then turn around in the next and talk about how they game the e-log in the next thread to not have it go into line 3 driving or what have you. Apparently it also allows a free pass to speed through small towns and construction zones and park anyplace you feel like at the truck stop including fuel islands, driveways, etc.

I don't have an e-log yet so I am learning on here as well. I can't hardly wait for Big Brother to coerce me into having one!!

Probably everybody who has any miles, despite the goodest trip plans. I imagine it's worse these days, with mostly everybody stuck on the road ~at the same hour/s, needing to park ~at the same hour/s. HOS is a fed issue, finding parking to comply with the HOS is the driver's problem. Nice work if you can get it.

Again, forgive my lack of knowing the process, but am I correct in inferring from your post that it is an issue of personal responsibility, and if so how should the industry handle that rogue driver who alters their paper log to rig the system in their favor while potentially acting in an unsafe manner?
If all drivers conducted their activities in a completely ethical way and worked 100% within the parameters of the HOS then e-logs would be a redundancy and a costly one at that.
Apparently the regulating authority feels that adherence is not at the level they expect to ensure the highest level of public safety.

Out of curiosity what are the safety statistics for the last 40 years regarding accidents and driver safety violations? How has the drug and ETOH screening process improved overall safety? Have the HOS regulations decreased accidents associated with fatigue?

I think (I say this not knowing due to my profound inexperience) that public safety issues are the driving force in motor carrier regulations and that e-logs are a tool that helps to ensure standards are being followed to the level that technology allows.

    Interesting subject...

your term "rogue" driver is a result of the industry bowing to political pressure, NOT because drivers need 10 hrs of sleep

I use rogue as a description of a lone driver who decides to work outside of the regulations for whatever reason they subjectively use to rationalized their conduct. Not everyone needs 10 hours sleep, not everyone needs to drive the posted speed limit, not every truck needs the mandated tire thread depth, but these are the agreed upon rules and regulations put in place to protect the motoring public as a whole.

Granted some of the HOS rules do appear to be overly restrictive and don't appear to take into consideration real world situations but the nature of any regulation or legislation is that they are suppose to address generalities not specifics or isolated variations.

No one proposed drivers need 10 hours of sleep, they granted them 10 hours "off".

At least some of the HOS debacle falls on carriers. You weren't around when running drivers "optimized" "10/8s" until they ran out of hours week after week was considered "part of the job" because it was legal. I put in many an 18 hour day logging 10.

    must just have been lucky
or maybe I take pride in doing my job correctly under any parameters
    that equals personal responsibility
    to me anyway
I don't look for an excuse not to do my job

I'm not Elogs....So is there an "out" for say getting caught in traffic resulting from an accident or weather...Like we always see "Running Vail"?....

The reason why I ask...In cases like that....Some DOT have told me we can "Shut it down" on the ribbon...But be prepared to move when things clear....
