Truck suddenly lost power, No engine codes set no smoke engine idels perfect. At first the engine would not go over 1500 rpm while parked in the yard. Checked fuel filter cartridge very dirty changed filter. RPM will now go to 2500rpm. Test drove truck still no power slight turbo sound could be heard but very slight.Could not see turbo impellar to check for broken fins. But some oil in the hose from the turbo to the charge air cooler. I'm thinking possibly bad turbo but I belive this turbo is electronically controlled and costs $2200.00. Want to be sure before replacing. Any help greatly appreciated.

There's a screen on the fuel inlet side that gets plugged with crap that makes its way past the filter. It's a dome shaped plastic housing that screws on/off. A channel locks works well to unscrew it. I would check and clean it good. It's commonly overlooked and causes lots of fuel related issues.

The turbo on these engines has an electonic actuator which moves linkage and the vanes inside the turbo. The linkage can get bound up, the vanes can seize and the actuator can fail, all without an engine light. It is a pretty common problem especially when they sit for a while or when coolant gets used by the engine (EGR cooler failure). You will need a helper to see if the actuator is working. Watch the little arm that goes the turbo while someone turns the key on (not start). The linkage will go through its range and then set somewhere in the middle. Have your helper turn the key back off and the linkage should go back to rest position. Do this three times. If it doesnt move or only moves a little, something is binding. Next you can do what they call a "bounce test". With the key off you can pull the linkage towards you and then release it. The linkage should go back to rest then "bounce" once or twice before it comes to a fully stop. You will be able to hear what I mean if it passes the bounce test. Now, you can diassable the linkage to figure out what exactly is binding and alot of times you can remove the turbo, take it apart, clean where the unison ring rides on the exhaust housing and put it all back together and it will be fine, but even the slightest amount of binding will cause you problems. There are also service kits available so you can individual parts for the turbo to replace the worn or seized peices. Also, these turbos do pass some oil, that is normal. If the pipe has pools of oil, that is a problem.
