Yes, a 40,000 lb coil is pretty hard to steal.

I watched two drivers yell at each other and almost get in a fight at a truck stop one day in az...something about taking up time in a fuel island blah blah blah...finally when they walked away from each other one driver walked to the back of the trailer and ripped the seal off...the other driver caught him and cops were called....idk what happened after that....

just carry a few seals, if it becomes damaged change it, note the number on the BOL and get on with life.

I always sign S.L.&C on B/L too, most of these places nowadays will not let a driver on the dock. First time in years, I had a guy tell me the other day I couldn't write that on the BL. I asked him if he would let met out of the cage, unload the product so I could count it, he says no. I kindly said SLC is staying on the B/L or you can unload the load off my trailer. He handed me my copies and didn't say another word.

I did the same thing too. In Salinas ,CA when they were loading some stupid organic food mix. It took them the whole night, reefer was running at the dock and they were adding 2-3 pallets every 45 minutes, so of course I stayed in the cab. And I was furious the whole time. After they were done, I signed the BOL as SLC (even though they were going to seal the trailer) and they objected to it firmly, so I also said either they unload the trailer and take their organic greens back or lets count it, which meant that either way they had to unload the trailer. So they did unload the trailer and we recounted it to every little tiny box that was there and it took a good hour and a half to complete the task. The count was a few boxes short of one item and a few boxes over of another, not a big deal. But mainly, I did that also to piss them off, as they were really rude when loading and they really tested my patience when I was sitting there half asleep the whole night. They wrote down the time of arrival, the time of loading started and when ended, so it screwed up my logbook possibilities too.

It is ridiculous that they want you to sign for pieces/pallets but they won't let you go beyond the cage just inside the door.

With the FSMA (Food Safety Modernization Act) there is/are new conditions/rules that have to be followed.

Not able to post link, but is the Sanitary Transportation section.

Believe it addresses seals for ALL food products, animal feed included.

When I was OTR I put a padlock on all loads. It won't avoid a broken seal situation but it will give you an idea if the situation is just a broken seal or a tampering with contents situation.
