I know this is a typical no start/intermittent start issue, but I need ideas of what to try next. Thanks ahead of time for any ideas.
1999 Freightliner Century with S60. I had intermittent start issues so I tried cleaning chassis ground, got new battery cables and new batteries. I have dash lights, but no start, no crank, no sounds. Multimeter reads 12.5 volts everywhere AND at the battery box, which seems weird with new batteries. Any ideas I could try? Thanks again.
no start issue after new batteries/cables

Pic of wires in batt box would be helpful, maybe the starter solenoid (key switch relay basically)
Rideandrepair and RepoweredRookie Thank this. -
Check the poles across your starter and then the sense wires there, the starter's solenoid could be bad but usually thats a gradual thing

I had that type of problem with my S60. I was knocking myself out with the batteries but couldn't get the starter to run, I finally called for a service truck, explained the problem to the guy. He opened up the fuse box under the hood and replaced a relay, the truck started like a champ after that. I don't have that truck any more so I can't explain which relay it was.

Thanks for the reply skallagrime. Good idea on taking a pic of the box, will do tomorrow. I had multimetered the starter solenoid and got 12.5 volts too, but I wasn’t sure about that solenoid on the firewall. I’m going to do some research on this key switch relay you mentioned, and grab a pic tomorrow. Thanks again!

If you had an intermittent no start and then changed the batteries and the cables and now you have no start at all most likely that's something that you did.
I'm not being critical at all, but that's the way to look at the problem. You have to go back over everything that you did.
Are you sure that the wiring was put back on exactly the way that you took it off? There are quite a number of wires that go onto the starter. Did you disturb the starter solenoid at all? I think most of them ground to the truck itself but mine has a separate ground so for sure it will spin. Are you sure that you put all of the grounds back that belong at the battery box?
There also is another wire for the starter button at the starter. Did you accidentally bump that or break it or even disconnect it?
And also if you're having starting issues it's important to change the starter solenoid that's up on the firewall if it's unknown how long that has been on the truck.
And also if the starter has been on for an unknown amount of time even though that may not be your problem it's probably a good idea to change that for dependability.
At that point all that's left is wiring and grounds and what you have replaced are all maintenance items that need to be replaced anyway.RepoweredRookie, Siinman, Rideandrepair and 2 others Thank this. -
Starter relay on the firewall , kinda looks like the empire state building . jump across the 2 big terminals starter will crank . eliminates cables, starter. then check for ground and voltage on 2 small wires when trying to start . if all good it is the relay
RepoweredRookie, Dino soar and Rideandrepair Thank this. -
I agree, the relay on the firewall. Usually a broken wire at the relay. Or the relay itself. Maybe the starter button or a broken wire. As others mentioned, if you can jump it at the relay, problems between the relay and ignition or relay itself.
