Every driver I have talked to said they're pretty good about getting you home. Obviously this is the trucking industry, so things happen, but if you're in their hiring area I don't think you could go wrong starting with Roehl. They arranged a non-smoking apartment during training and a non-smoking trainer.

They actually called me and asked if I wanted smoking or non-smoking. My overall experience thus far has been great. The recruiters and instructors alike have been great and the company has a great safety record and it's easy to see why. My first day was almost completely devoted to safety and they continue to stress it in everything we have done so far. I have been checking out the OTR trucks around the terminal and they are all almost new and look to be in great condition. The class is small too, so you have plenty of hands-on time.

It seems most carriers will try to accomodate smokers and nonsmokers in regard to trainer assignments. As a former non smoking driver trainer I have trained both smokers and non smokers.
I asked the smokers to refrain from smoking in the truck while on my truck. This was difficult for them but I would stop every few hours for them to have a cigarette break.
It all depends on what type of trainers the company has available at the time you complete orientation. If you demand a non smoking trainer they may ask you to wait until they get 1 available. If you are unwilling to wait for your training to begin then you may have to compromise and accept a trainer that does smoke. Ultimately its your decision though.
