Hammer? You don't have a ujoint press tool?

I take a bottle jack on blocks and push on a joint bearing cap (end of jack is smaller than diameter of yoke round) and never had it not break. I've raised the truck until finally the end caps break free from the round. I reinstall with a huge c-clamp and wood on the end caps of the new yoke.

Meritor has ujoints. I prefer Spicer. But have used a Meritor in a pinch.

You definitely want to press those caps out. Beating on them can damage the ears on the shaft.

I have used a similar program with full round joints. Jack goes under the weld between the yoke and tube. Have to watch what is going on so as not to bend the tube. Remove the bolts from the top cap and push it out. Sometimes tapping on the side of the yoke, with a small hammer, next the cap helps. Once at night working with a flash light I discovered all 8 drive tires were off the ground. Put a little heat to the yoke next to the cap. That was exciting.
Sometimes I just take a torch and cut to cross out. #### all the pounding and excitement. Care required as extreme pressure can be created in the grease passages. When the passage is cut into hot burning grease can erupt out of the joint. If it has a fitting remove it first.
Also have a u-joint puller that works great with some joints.

I don't mess with it enough to buy a tool. I already have wood and an sledge hammer.

I broke down and bout the tool. For $120ish.....well worth it. So much easier and cuts down the job to about 1/3 the time. Glad I bought it.

I misspoke and didn't remember right. I would put a board under the driveshaft at the yoke and lift with a 20 ton bottle jack to free the U-joint end cap (after taking out 2 screws securing each cap to the yoke). It has been 14 years since I last had full rounds.
