I do not know, but it seems the easier part would be to go and take the written exam to have the restriction lifted? If I am reading this right, an airbrake and general knowledge would get you to the right point. In addition, if you are going to school outside of your home state, you will need to get a permit in that state anyways, so it may not matter.

Just curious, if you have a CDL, what is a "No tractor trailer restriction"? Are you saying you have a CDL that allows you to drive a 10 wheeler only? Or what?

He took the Exam for a Class A in a Vehicle Grossing 26,001 with Airbrakes No Combination.
I would suggest go back to DMV take the Combination Test, have them add it to your endorsements, therefore removing the Restriction of NO Tractor Trailer.
Virgina Does the same thing for people who take the road test in a Dump Truck, without a trailer, it is essentially no Combination vehicles,
The DMV states you must test in the Class of Vehicle that you plan to operate, -
The restriction is that you cannot drive a tractor with a 5th wheel plate. It is really considered a Class B (straight truck)but, in the past some states did issue the Class A with the restriction. NC and SC do not allow this anymore.
You would have to take the permit test for the Class A.
The test will cover, as mentioned above:
General Knowledge
Air Brakes
Combination Vehicle
The permit test is about $15.00 and the permit itself is approx. $25.00.
The initial cost of the test will give you 3 chances to pass. I believe that the DMV charges an additional $2.00 to retake any part of the test and you must wait 24hrs before you are able to retest.
Get a CDL manual from your local DMV and also utilize the crist.com/roadwars website to help with your studies.

Same way in CA...most Fire Dept personnel are required to get a Class B, tanker, Haz-Mat, Air Brakes...but keep in mind a Fire Engine is actually a straight truck chassis with a tank and multiple tool and hose compartments...

Thanks for all the responses, I have class A because the trailer we haul, is over 10,000 lbs., I have taken combination , air, general knowledge , I was just wondering if that would allow me to drive with a Class A driver next to me, when learning the 5th wheel ?

jmatherly2,
I have the same thing in SC. What it is for the other drivers I took the general knoweledge, combination, and air brakes test. Then I did pre trip and driver test with a dump truck and a trailer. But the trailer had a pendelton hitch not a fifth wheel. Thus a class A with 5th wheel restriction. Not sure in NC but in SC I went to TDI and yes it will act as a permit in school. Because you took the same test that a trucker would. Hope this helps!!jmatherly2 Thanks this. -
