I work for Fedex hauling doubles and have always been told that North Carolina state route 68 is restricted for doubles. It is the shortcut from 220 to I40. When I have hauled singles down this road I have seen other company doubles on it. I have been trying to find this answer out online for a day now and I am hoping someone here knows. I can't ask Fedex because they have set routes they want us to take but we all go the shortest possible.

are there no signs ANYWHERE on that route to tell you? cuz if there's no signs. then it shouldn't be a problem.

everyone says you can't take 53 foot trailers along the 550 in new mexico. yet there's no signs. and i've seen double bellies along that route all the time.

it was a long winded discussion on this sight 2 years ago.

I know it was a few years ago and yes some doubles run 68 and it is a short cut. I checked with a friend who works for yellow and he said as far as he knows it's still restricted. with FedEx it's off route also with yellow it's the same. My friend said a yellow was caught and they made him brake them down and single back to 220 with each trailer and also make a trip pulling his dolly single then build his set again. If a 53 footer can go a set of doubles can do it better. I think the most important thing is it's off route with FedEx but all they can do is give you a letter for being off route, were talking about 15 min's it saves.

    IN Regards to US-550.

If you have truck set at 48' 96" it should take you on US-550. It is not restricted- just not STAA.

A lot of states do not post restrictions.

    Thanks,
    Mark

Technically you can't run a 53 foot trailer on any non STAA designated route in New Mexico as the non designated NM limit is still 48 feet. However that limit is rarely, if ever enforced since I think changing the length limit would require legislative action (not an issue that they have in their crosshairs) and the NM DOT acknowledges the industry is running 53 foot trailers exclusively now so they don't make a fuss as long as you aren't on an overall length restricted route like US82 near Alamogordo.

I've been stopped by the NM DOT at the border patrol checkpoint near Deming on NM26. That is not a designated route but the officer made no mention of my trailer length.

    Non-STAA = 48',96"
    STAA - 53', 102"

    this is for any state..

OK, I've just talked to North Carolina Department of transportation. I will send you a link to the restricted NC roads in that area. It is still restricted for doubles and they are checking it for doubles. It's seems that complaints have been filed because doubles are running 68 and even a DOT agent, Lisa said she didn't understand because doubles are safer on 68 than 53 footers. In the past they allow you to brake down your unit but now you get a ticket and 2 points on you divers license and you must brake down unit but the good part is you don't have to go back to 220, you can run it to a intersection near I-40 and build your set again. It's still pull singles and dolly, that's three trips. Court cost is $80.00 plus fine and that can run up to $150.00. Lisa told me I could file a complaint with NCDOT and get a hearing in Greensboro because she looked back and there has not been a challenge to this. I am sending a letter to Senator Hagan due to the fact that it is safer to run 68 as opposed to 220 in that area. You know the condition of 220 and the traffic. Lisa with the DOT is going to email me the accidents on 220 so I can send report with letter to Senator Hagan, she has help me before so I know her by filling other complaints, hope it works for you.......

In filling a complaint I've found out the restriction on 68 is not listed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, here is the restricted truck lanes as listed by North Carolina Public records law GS 132 and it does not have a restriction listed no where. I also checked with NC Transport Enforcement and they have it listed as restricted but Records of laws concerning GS 132 does not have it as restricted so maybe just a simple ex parte filling is all that is needed. Here is a link as part of GS 132 https://connect.ncdot.gov/business/trucking/Trucking%20Documents/North%20Carolina%20Truck%20Restrictions.pdf , thanks for asking this question because it would appear they have over looked this restriction and we may be able to open this section of highway to I-40 from 220 using SR-68 for doubles, you may have help many drivers drive the safest lane to I-40 also saving time and fuel.
