Just checking to see if anybody been through this program, been looking at schools near me and this about the closest.. After working 23 yrs. in a mill in North Ga. was just layed off and wanting to get plan ready for when I can get some retraining funding from WIA or TAA.. Any imput would be appreciated..Have Epes and Millis as two top choices, even though I just need permit to start with Millis would like to get the CDL if funding will do it.. Another thing to is this school isn't on Epes list of approved schools . So that would'nt help me with getting on with them..So next on the list would be Roehl, would be good to have it already took care of and that much less to get through..Thanks..

I believe that you are referring to Northwestern Georgia Tech. There is also Chattanooga State just across the border in Tennessee and a private school in Tunnel Hill, GA. I believe the school is called Great Southern? You may want to check with all of them. The state schools will be much less expensive. I know that Chattanooga State has a good school. I don't know anyone who has been through the one at Northwestern, but they should also have a good program.

The one that I was thinking about is in LaFayette. Just make sure that they are fully accredited. Otherwise, you could spend your money for nothing. If it is a state sponsored school they should be alright. You might ask them about job placement and then talk to some of those employers about those that they have hired from the school. It is important to get as much seat time as possible. But, in reality, most of these schools are basically only going to help you get your CDL. Your real training will come when you find a job and get with a trainer. There are several carriers that do inhouse training programs, such as Swift, Millis, Roehl, Covenant, CRST and Stevens (?). The down side to receiving your training through a carrier is that you will be obligated to work for most for a year or repay them thousands of dollars for your training. If you get your CDL prior to finding a job then you will usually start a a slightly higher pay rate and speed up the process of getting into a truck by yourself or with a team.

Yea that was what I was shooting for.. kinda make the process a little smoother.. trying to research and get it all worked out as to where to go to school..and if it doesn't work out, well could always go with company sponsored..

If you are wanting to go to Millis they only hire students from their own school. You would have to get some experience first. I went to North Georgia Tech in Jan '11. I heard Bruce Lane left though so I don't know how much has changed.
