Loads are cheaper because of the economy and the abundance of trucks.

Even when the economy is good cheap loads exist due to an abundance of capacity in a market.

That's why loads out of the Northeast for example are always cheap.
lots of trucks run into there for the higher rates in and shippers know trucks will haul cheap to get out knowing there's more capacity than volume.

    Here's some news:

Swift Transportation to Halt Fleet Growth on Weak Demand, Pricing"
    ...
"Analysts said Swift’s move to halt capacity growth is aimed at bolstering freight rates amid a soft patch in the economy that has hurt transportation companies across the board."

    Trucking stocks hit reverse:
    ...
"Trucking company stocks tumbled Tuesday after several firms gave bleak outlooks for freight demand, raising fears that the industry may soon need to cut shipping rates.
... Roadrunner Transportation Systems Inc., which operates a midsize LTL fleet, cut its guidance for future profits and revenue on Monday, citing weak demand and “aggressive pricing activity,” indicating lower rates offered by its competitors.
... A prolonged downturn would likely result in a surplus of available trucks, forcing carriers to cut prices as they compete for fewer loads, analysts say, a battle for business that would weigh on profitability."

    More stocks down:

Trucking stocks are turning in some of the market's worst performances on the day, dragging the Dow Jones Trucking Index down by 2.7 percent. Werner Enterprises and YRC Worldwide are posting standout losses.

Saia missed badly on Q3 earnings and sales, sending its shares crashing as the trucking company was hurt by declining tonnage trends in the industry.
The Johns Creek, Ga.-based company earned 46 cents a share, down 28.1% from a year earlier and missing views by 22 cents. Revenue fell 4.6% to $317.2 million, missing estimates of $328.4 million.

Saia CEO Rick O'Dell said the company will "aggressively manage costs" amid the low-volume climate for trucking in the U.S.

Shares plunged 21% to 23.72 on the stock market today after tumbling 7.9% Tuesday.

Well it is not hitting all companies. There is an organization that has acquired 9 flatbed carriers since 2009. None of the 9 were even on the market to be sold which means they sold at a premium. They are getting ready to go public and will have the IPO within the next year.. driver shortage is listed at 48,000 this year and is expected to jump to over 100,000 in the next 2 years. So is it possible that it is isolated to the Megas or possibly it is the frieght segment that is slowing down. Because the Flatbed/ Specialized Hauling sector is growing and in most areas of the country are not experiencing a slow down in freight or frieght rates except for the seasonal slow down. Actual frieght rates in that segment are rising and has been for the last 3 years at a steady pace of 3% on average across major flatbed/specialized carriers.

Ok..how can you book a trip 700 miles away? The load board only allows you to go out a max of 495? Second if you think it only costed you around 150.00 to go there your crazzzzzzy that truck cost way more to operate than that...while I am only in my second month I call B$ ....

Actually you can search the load board up to 999 miles if i remember correctly, but even then what's to limit your search on loads? Do you have to search for loads based on your next available location? Not at all. If you're in Los Angeles per say, and you want to search for a load in Dallas, all you have to do is enter the town you want to search for a load in. There are no restrictions as to where you can search for a load.
