I'm on my fourth week of CDL training, two weeks of classroom which I excelled at, obtained my permit & all endorsements.
I'm now on my second week of driving, {3 days a week 4 hrs each} and i'm having a hell of a time of it !
Having no experience whatsoever I knew it would not be easy, But I never expected to do SO POORLY !
I am making progress, and I continue to approach it with a positive attitude.

    So my question is....
Are there others who struggled as I am, Yet continued on to be successful, professional drivers ?

LOL... do you really think you are the most inept person on the planet? Of course Others have struggled, not every one took an exit ramp out of the womb while grabbing gears.

Take a trip to your local truck stop and watch the people there, get a good look at the drivers that come and go and ask yourself, if that person can do it, why can't I?

Hang in there brother, just keep improving a little bit each day, from now till the end of your driving career.. just a little improvement each and every day.

I went through CDL school at a local comunity college last May-June. I remember there was a guy in my class that did great in the classroom, but as soon as we got to the truck it was the total opposite. I remember talking to one of the other guys in the class and we both thought he wasn't going to be able to do it. But one day it just clicked and from then on he was the best driver in our group by a long shot. Just keep a positive attitude and trust that you will pick it up with practice.

You said "I knew it would not be easy" If it was easy everyone would be doing it

I am making progress This is a good thing shows your learning

I continue to approach it with a positive attitude. With that you will make it, if you do not you knw you did your best, and that is all we or anyone can ask of you DO YOUR BEST.

Many before you have tried, some did not make it but others who you would think fail made it.. Positive attitude will take you a long long way, even after your out of school.

I did great in class, excellent on road training.: BUT failed my drive test twice! (clipped curbs). I've been out here 5 years since and worst I've done is pop a tire on some hidden rebar.

Relax, keep positive and learn. Also see if the instructor can get you some extra wheel time (another student doesn't show up, or weekends). If company schoolhouse, see if you can assist with a local delivery or two.

In school, I flew through the clasroom portion. I even came in already holdng my permit. By the end of classroom, I was holding the highest GPA at that point and the instructors knew I'd been basically running my husband's truck from home (trip planning, time management, fuel stops, adjusting tandem location, ect). And then we got behind the wheel. I had never driven standard anything and the largest thing I'd ever driven was a dually with a two-horse trailer.I picked up driving forwards and shift gears after about two days and did well, but God forbid I try to back up. I was discouraged when I became the last one t be able t figure out the backing maneuvers. Backing up was just beyond me and I couldnt grasp the concepts in terms that my brain woukd understand and retain. I kept at it and my fellow students and the instructors were helpful and patient. I literally had a lightbulb moment two-days before we tested out. First I mastered parallel parking and was excited by sudden progress, but it had jammed the door open to understand the other maneuvers. After that I was able to offset back. At that point I knew I coukd ace straight line backing, and perform a passable offset and parallel park. With the way FL is, I coukd ace the straight and the offset and straight up refuse to do the third maneuver (computer randomized between a driverside or offside parallel park or an alley dock)) and I coukd still get my CDL. Once I relaxed, I was fnally able to alley dock without murdering cones. Just a week earlier, I had been discouraged and was questionng my decision to do this. In the end, I scored the highest on road and range tests as well as classroom. I had the highest GPA overall and even later looked at my hubby's school stuff and had beat his score too.

Stick with it and dont try to compare your progress against others. It is a goal, but not a race. You can do it too!
