Hoping there may be some help out there, I know many are in the same boat or worse. I got most of the way thru my CDL school, actually got my cdl, but the last part of school requires an externship with a company. I supposedly had 2 pre hires before I started school (only reason I even went) and when time came to set up orientation neither would take me. I have a felony from nearly 10 years ago(arrest was 1999, actual date I signed the papers was june 2000) which was clearly on both of the applications and both sent letters(via fax) that I was approved. One company said they didn't know how I got approved because they have a 0 felony policy, the other said it has to be over 10 years. Supposedly when I submitted the apps both had a 7 year policy.
So now I have a CDL and cant get anyone to talk to me. I am hoping someone might know of a company, large, small O/O ANYBODY who would give me a chance to prove myself to them. Like I said ... not holding my breath ... but hopeful.

Attention employers: We now require a valid DOT# for anyone wishing to post a driving position. If your job offer doesn't contain a DOT number, it will not get past moderation and will not appear in the forum. The other requirements in the sticky at the top of this section are still required as well. Thank you for understanding.
Not holding my breath!

this is becoming a common thing with companies. they have on their web sites that the felonies have to be 5 or 7 years old, then when you talk to them they say oh no it has to be over 10 years old or they do not hire felons at all. funny, mine was in '02, and the company i was with kept me on because they knew i was railroaded on the charge, and i even have my twic card, but most of the companies will not take me because of the felony in '02.
the only other thing i can add is don't give up.RedWolffe Thanks this. -
Try this co. out. My dad drives for them and they are an old school co.

Tried Belknap... same thing, has to be 10 years before they will talk to you, and they want 1 yr experience. I have put in several on line apps, both directly to companies and thru a mass app website. Found out something about those from the job placement people at school. She talked to someone from one of the companies to see if they might work with me to atleast get my externship done so I can graduate school and the recruiter told her to have me call and give her some info because they only pull a random 25% of the online apps they receive. I called and the recruiter told me same as all the others...
So now I am trying some online sites for expediters ... already had one guy send me an email looking for someone to team with on a straight truck .... waitin to hear back from him again, meanwhile the other job placemnet person at school is calling some people he knows at some smaller companies near Cleveland.... I hope something shakes loose soon, the wife and I are about at wit's end. -
What is Belknap's accident policy?

Well.... struck out with May too. They might take me if I had my school certificate already but that is part of the problem, I am in a Catch 22 here. Can't officially graduate until I can find a company that will provide the school with the weekly evaluations for 200 hrs worth of driving for the shcool and the only companies that have even indicated that they will take me won't do the internship and want a certificate from the school.
The possibility of going with the guy that contacted me from the expediter web site is looking good, but it is straight truck ... at least I can get some driving experience. -
Looks like the hopes were up again only to have the rug ripped out from under me one more time. Nothing seems to be shakin with the one guy who might have been interested from the expediter's web site. I have one last ditch effort in the works: found an electrical contractor not too far away looking for a class A driver. Kinda ironic havin been an electrician for so long and not being able to find work in that field either. If that falls through I don't know what I am gonna do ... I can only beat my head against a wall for so long.
I just wish the school had told me up front that this was likely to happen, but of course then they wouldn't have gotten the money for me going there. Not sure what wil happen there ... cant finish school so I am kinda wondering if the gov loan for the tuition will fall through? -
Redwolffe, I dont know what the felony was or anything, but I was thinking that maybe you could look into getting it expunged since it's keeping you from getting a job. With the economy being bad and lack of freight, companies are being very picky about who they hire. good luck!

I appreciate the replies that have been made to this thread. I have been trying everything that I can think of and am getting nowhere. You would think that a school would tell you that there is no way you could get on with a company while still on probation before they put you in a program that requires 200hrs behind the wheel with a company to be able to graduate. If I can't graduate I believe the funding gets withdrawn... will have to call to find out about that for sure. I was very upfront with the school recruiter and they told me I had 2 pre hires ... gave me the papers to show it.
Now they are blaming the companies, but the companies are blaming the school... I just blame myself; shoulda known better. I have talked to lawyers in Texas and they have told me there is no way I can get the charge expunged. The charge was 2 counts of assault on a public servant, which was reduced from the origional laundry list of stuff they wanted to charge me with. I guess I can maybe wait till June 2010 and find companies that ask if I have been convicted in the last 10 years or less then I can say no. I don't think there is much hope left for anything else.
