You "forgot" to mention one important thing (a driver "perk")....

it appears that most...if not all of Dot's tractor fleet...are Volvo tractors.....

@ducnut The $800/week training period pay is not a deal breaker. I know I'm not gonna make very much to start out with anywhere. I just need to start somewhere and "do my time" to get that one year experience so more doors open up to me. But from looking at that pay scale at DOT and what you said about all the fancy driver owned vehicles there, DOT may be where I should focus in on and maybe even stay with long term. I'm looking at regional no touch freight. That's 4 on/4 off. Looks pretty good to me.

@lual I don't know a whole lot about what tractor brands are more desirable than others. But I'm assuming from what you said that Volvos are one of the more desirable ones?

DOT's Volvos are automatics. I'm going for the manual CDL, so I'll be able to drive automatics as well as manuals.

4-on/4-off is a schedule option; not a job classification.

Volvo and Freightliner will keep you on the road, working. Peterbilt and Kenworth will have you in the shop, questioning life choices. Volvo is my preference.

Very few manual companies, these days.

DOT in Vidalia is currently hiring. I'll go ahead and call them tomorrow and tell them where I'm at in my CDL school and that I'd like to start out with them. It'll take some time to get my TWIC card and hazmat endorsement once I graduate the CDL class in mid-June. May be August before I actually have those. Hopefully DOT will still be hiring then. I'm hoping that if I call them right now while they're hiring, they'll work with me and be able to get me in once I have the hazmat endorsement.

For what it's worth -- when I first started out -- I contacted no one....for a-n-y-thing....until I had that CDL -- plus the requisite endorsements.

Face it -- you're really no good to them (or anyone else) until you have that CDL in your wallet.

I submitted completed applications (again, with that CDL....+ endorsements)....& then called them later...if they didn't contact me, first.

I wanted to come across as interested....& qualified....& genuinely worth their time.....but nothing else.

    But hey, it's your choice....

@lual Yeah, that makes sense. I'm just a bit nervous and anxious to get started and don't want to miss a good opportunity. I should wait to contact them until I have everything in hand I guess.

I submit to you -- that the given opportunity with Dot (& others) will likely still be there -- later....when you're ready.

    Why?

Becuz....driving a truck requires (among other things) a stout work ethic (even with dry van duty).

Thus -- as time goes by -- fewer & fewer people are genuinely willing to step up to the plate, & keep swinging.

That's one major reason (among others) why I got into it.

It naturally weeds out the lazy....& those who aren't the long-distance runners.

@lual I really appreciate the time you and others take to guide me with your advice. I already know that even after I'm behind the wheel with whatever company I get into, I'll never forget you guys here on this forum. You're like a lighthouse in a storm at sea. Thank you so much! I'll keep you updated.

Hopefully, they’ll accept the training you’re receiving, as they don’t accept every school’s training.

Vidalia is always hiring, as there’s a real lack of work ethic, in that area. When I’ve been there, their dispatch always tried to keep me there, working for them. I’d have to get my dispatcher involved, to get out of their clutches. Holidays were the worst.
