Well, I passed the phone interview with DOT Transportation and was waiting to hear from a hiring manager to set up an in person interview and then I got a turn down email from them. No idea why. The only reason I can think of is they say on their website they want people who live less than 100 miles from the DC and I live exactly 103 miles away. Oh well, their loss.
Not much time and only one shot at this. Please help.

Do you have a CDL?
Do you have a hazmat endorsement?
Did you submit a completed application, first?
It might well have something to do with the above...

The lady on the phone interview knew all that and saw I didn't have hazmat yet and she said "That's OK, you can get that as soon as you get hired. I'm sending your app to the hiring manager." Then I got the turn down email. It was a form letter with no reason given. It said I can reapply in 90 days. I don't know what's going on. -
Apparently....the hiring mgr she forwarded to felt somewhat differently ("that's NOT ok").
As indicated...you can in fact reapply again, later....after you get that CDL & that hazmat endorsement.
Obviously, you could stay in your current job until then...
If you need other CDL job options before 90 days out.....you do have other alternatives.
Also: experience with another carrier might well get Dot's attention, later.

You will find...
if you stay in this line of business....
that PATIENCE.....
is indeed an incredible virtue -- & will bring to you a lot of success.

Hello James G. I've been casually following this thread and waited for someone to give you this option.
When you get your CDL, you can check local construction jobs, roofing supply, concrete, and lumber mills all need drivers for the busy season. Pay may not be great, but you'll be home every night and you'll get experience. Just make sure it's a tractor trailer job, not a class B. If you're driving a class B truck that usually won't count as class A experience.
Another option would be Food Service. While Sysco and US foods are extremely brutal with the physical work required, some smaller outfits, often specializing in convenience stores, aren't so bad. It's often night work or very early morning. Often these companies have linehaul positions that are drop and hook.
At least it would get you six months of experience while you set up a good opportunity.
Obviously how bad your back is may limit some choices. My back has given me trouble at times but I was able to baby it as needed. I don't think throwing straps over a flat bed is too strenuous, but your situation may be beyond that.
Good Luck!James G Thanks this. -
@omaharj Thank you very much for the advice. I'm taking all I can get.
-
UPDATE: I just passed CDL school and got my full unrestricted CDL-A. I can drive manuals and automatics. My next step is to get my doubles & triples and hazmat endorsements. I already have my tankers endorsement. One step at a time

Any other CDL school visitors -- besides Melton & Benny Whitehead?
