If money is a high priority, put the reefer companies as first choice and use the dry van companies as a backup plan.
You can survive with either, but a few dollars more every week, is a few dollars more!
They'll all work though to get your new career started.

One of the guys that I graduated the CDL class with is now a student driver for US Xpress. He gave me all the details and said it's all really good. It all seems good to me to start out with. Swift owns US Xpress I believe. He gave me the contact info for his recruiter and I sent him a voicemail and an email.

WATCH OUT: BE SURE....especially as a totally green driver -- you don't get pushed/railroaded into one of those mega-fleet dedicated accounts that is in fact a dollar-store delivery gig!

MUCH BETTER dedicated options: Walmart, Target, Lowe's, Home Depot, etc -- think "big box" store chains. Those usually offer steady freight, & drop-n-hook.

    Just what you need.

That's an issue I've been struggling with for quite some time now researching what trucking companies I want to try to get on with. I hear good and bad about all of them. There's no way for someone like me just getting started to really know and be able to make an informed decision. And there are SO MANY of them. It's information overload and I'm worried I'll make a mistake and get on with one that'll take advantage of me like you just described and then I've failed when I only just started. I have no problem "doing my time" to get the one year experience required to get on with a really "good" company making decent money. I'm nervous and don't want to screw this up.

Don't overthink this too much. You just need to get started and do a few months to qualify for more companies that may be more to your interests.
One driver in Texas went with US Express and said the pay is bad; looks good on paper though.
Just a big gamble. US Express did require 3 mos. experience for those dedicated accounts and now hiring drivers right out of cdl school.
Stay away from Dollar General or similar accounts because they're career destroyers due to fender benders in Dollar General parking lots. The docks just aren't set up for tractor-trailers.

To be fair to you, ask your buddy how much his paychecks are. Maybe the pay is ok for you. At least you know someone to verify the paychecks.
