Call the company and ask. I don't really trust most drivers reviews. In fact, I don't even read them.
One driver gets upset about something, then starts posting that the company sucks and everyone there sucks and I'm going to hire a lawyer and sue the company.

Then there's the ones that tell people, "Don't become a trucker; it will be the biggest mistake of your life; be a plumber. I've been driving for 10 years, so I know what I'm talking about!"
They never explain why they continue to drive instead of becoming a plumber.
Not much time and only one shot at this. Please help.

"No detention pay" ....probably means no detention pay -- for the first hour or two that you sit at a dock, loading or unloading.
After that -- it's probably something like $12 - $15 per hour.
For the same amount of time -- this is clearly not $$$$ competitive with what you would make with drop & hook loads.

I'll ask them when I call. I read driver reviews, but I take the negative ones with a grain of salt. What I really pay attention to is the volume of negative reviews. If there's a whole lot of them and more bad than good, then it's probably a bad company.

I've watched videos from two different drivers and it appears that there's no detention pay at all, no matter how long you sit. If the wheels aren't turning, you're not getting paid anything. One of the drivers' videos were 4 years old and the other one's was over 10 years old, so that may have changed by now. I don't know. The driver whose videos were 4 years old was a new driver at the time and he made videos of his journey from training all the way until he passed training and got his own truck. He started out at 42 cpm 4 years ago and his first paycheck was $997 for about 2700 OTR miles. That was even after not getting any detention pay. I'm ok with that pay because it's at least equal to or more than I'm making right now. Both drivers said that sometimes they had to sit for 1 or 2 days with no detention pay, but that was rare to have to sit that long. It's reefer loads, sometimes meat and they say the meat deliveries are sometimes slow to load/unload.
EDIT: I just now watched a 1 year old video from another new driver who said there's no detention or layover pay at all, no matter how long you have to sit.Last edited: Aug 11, 2025

I've never heard of or worked for a reefer company that didn't pay detention.
They always pay stop pay + detention.

The guy in the recent video said that they "do" pay layover, but they won't give it to you. They stall you until you just give up. He and 3 others all said they don't pay detention at all. Everything else seems good and the drivers all say good things about everything but that and home time isn't great. I haven't put in any apps yet.Chinatown Thanks this.

Follow-up: if Swift &/or Dot somehow neither pan out -- you can try this carrier (same as that in post #19 of this thread):
Werner Enterprises -- still hires new CDL holders
I still see them soliciting for new drivers....even in Florida.
Werner has A LOT of different accounts. How much you will make there depends on (like everywhere else):
- Your experience level
- Whether you are solo, or team
- Which account(s) you agree to work
- Whether you are regional or OTR
- And still other factors
As a beginner -- working a Home Depot account (or similar, like Target) would be perfect for you: not too easy....but not overwhelming, either.
To repeat: avoid those dollar-store accounts like the plague.

In case your CDL school instructors did not cover this with you & your class (mine did not):
dry van or reefer: how to slide trailer tandems
Here's another video on the same thing -- but instead of a lever, a button is used -- these tandems thus use an air-release system:

If your trainer is decent -- they will go over this procedure with you (mine did not).
But seeing this ahead of time will hopefully later shorten your learning curve.

It shows as separate at Service Status | TSA Enrollment by IDEMIA
The "HME" tab is for hazmat and it says "ELIGIBILITY DETERMINED - TSA sent official notification of your Hazardous Materials Endorsement eligibility to your state of license." I already went and passed the test and got the hazmat endorsement on my CDL.
The "TWIC" tab is for TWIC and it says "ELIGIBILITY ASSESSMENT IN PROGRESS - Your application has been received and your eligibility assessment is underway. Status as of 07/21/2025" and it has said that ever since day one when I went to the TSA office on 07/21/2025.
3 more days will be a month I've been waiting on the TWIC to get approved.
Do you know of another way to check this or speed it up?
