Update for you guys. So far so good. I'm getting my CDL under the "Alternative Vision Standard" due to being blind in one eye. I passed the vision exam for that. I passed the DOT physical and have my med card. I passed the test for the CDL Learner's Permit and got that. I've been accepted into the local tech college to train and get my full CDL once I pass that. My classes are May 13th.through Aug 4th.
Hopefully I'll find a good company to drive for doing line haul or long haul. I don't think I can do P&D because I have back problems.Chinatown Thanks this. -
Hopefully your classes there have some manual tranny trucks -- & are not all just autos.
You want to do your final exam on a manual trans tractor -- if at all possible.
If back problems -- scratch P&D, & flatbed duty.
To start things off/near the beginning -- that leaves pulling "boxes"....&/or tankers.
Do keep us posted on your further progress.
-- Lborn&raisedintheusa and James G Thank this. -
I didn't get my tanker endorsement on my learner's permit because I was already worried enough about passing the test. I only missed 2 questions on the entire test, though.born&raisedintheusa Thanks this. -
If need be --
Ask your nearest/local DMV office where you can test out on a manual tractor....for your CDL.
Also: pay attention to the carriers that visit your class during CDL school (if any). Get business cards. Get names & phone numbers. Make sure they get your name, as well. Ask questions about their routes, hometime options, & how long you can expect to be out on a trainer's truck...stuff like that.
In the current/near future CDL job market -- those contacts may turn out to later be your best job leads.
I'm thinking you will most likely see reps from:
- Swift
- Schneider
- Werner
- perhaps a small, local carrier that I'm not aware of
James G Thanks this. -
Two carriers to keep on your radar....given recent & world events....that should still offer stable employment:
FFE -- reefer linehaul freight -- terminal to terminal work (mostly)
&
Dot Transportation -- reefer fleet -- easily one of the best reefer gigs -- DC is in Vidalia, Ga

@James G
One other possible suggestion:
Tyson Foods out of Springdale Arkansas
Good luck to you and your family! God bless you and your family!
God bless every American and their families! God bless the U.S.A.!
The absolute sheer driving force of our national economy - without truck drivers, our entire national economy would come to an absolute standstill - if not outright be dead.
Over the mountains, through the woods, into the valleys, coast to coast, from sea to shining sea - truck drivers can and do go anywhere and everywhere, every day, every night, all year round. -
born&raisedintheusa Thanks this.

sorry man, i'm not reading all that but hope you are well.
