i never set the trailer breaks unless on on a hill, and if its enough of a hill to have to set the trailer breaks should probably chock the tires as well. beat the breaks loose a couple times and you wont set the trailer breaks either.

I got 44 in the box right now. My tractor only has parking brakes on one axle. It will roll if i don't set both while on even a small incline. I just had my truck dot inspected and they only had to adjust one brake.

If I'm Bob tailing and set my parking brake I can put it in 1st gear and slowly let off the clutch and I will start rolling forward without much resistance. So my parking brakes on the tractor are only good enough to hold my tractor, and that's it.

I only do it when there's a chance the trailer air lines could freeze.

aaaand, when I was in Montreal a few days ago I did a relay where the other driver did pop the trailer brakes while he was waiting for me to show up. We swapped trailers, I went to go and one of the brakes were frozen. Luckily I rolled it in reverse a little and that was enough to get them free.

    So yeah, it can happen!

Taught at school to only set the trailer if I'm dropping it, parking on a grade, or walking away from the truck. - that said, we check the brake adjustment on every pre-trip and we are normally unloaded so the tractor doesn't have any trouble holding the rig.

How about those drivers who do the reverse, set the trailer but not the tractor to fool the idle shutdown timer. You can always spot them, they're parked with their DRL's on, lol!

I only set both if I'm parking and shutting the engine off for an extended period.
