Good advice. Another good reason to only consider working for companies that are near home.

I can remember in the 70`s even early 80`s you call a company on the phone, ask if they need a driver, THEN ASK, what are you guys paying. You did actually ask them what they are paying and they never hesitated to tell you about there pay scale on the phone. I dont think they still do that.

Right, but the point of this thread is a company should complete the background checks and whatever other checks they run, BEFORE the person is approved, and spends the money and time to travel to said company thinking they have a job, only to be told to go back home.

It doesn't matter how well qualified you are sometimes . The BFI's know they will reject a certain percentage of wannabes that show up for orientation so they call in more than they need . If by some odd chance more than expected are truly qualified some will still be rejected and sent home .
It's best not to try to enter the industry unless you have connections that guarantee a job with a good company . Only a small percentage last more than a few months with a BFI .

How true this is RickG, Years ago, none the this crap happened. Call them on the phone, they asked a little about your driving and then they said, come in, and you were hired.

Aw , come on . Someone taking drugs should be warned about the drug test ? As far as the physical goes aren't physical cards required now to get a CDL permit ?

I think the point is if you run COMPLETE checks on everyone who fills out an application you waste a lot of money. I'm a small carrier(22 company +O/O's). I get about 15 calls a week for employment. Many of them just want to fill out an application to show looking for work. I try to weed those out first. A quick mvr/dac report runs 12.95 and a few minutes of time. That just starts the process. A complete background check runs over 150.00 and can take a few hours of time(depending on number of past jobs) Multiply that by the hundreds of applications a larger company can get every week. You have to take some of what people say at face value untill you find otherwise. Many people "forget" things that they think may be harmfull to them and hope it never shows up. I would never run a complete background unless someone actually shows up at my office.

Agree completely, but for so many to fail the drug test? Seems someone dropped the ball there. CRST has their drivers get iowa permits before they begin the driving part of the training.

When I applied(4 mths ago), i had my physical, drug test, copy of my driving record and letter of reference from my last employer along with my resume. there were no surprises and my interviews got down to hours, money and expectations.
I can't understand how anyone will travel across the country on a hope that everything is good when they haven't done the basics for themselves.

i guess i would like that too, if they did a pre hire background check on me, id gladly pat the 150 as part of the pre hire process, sorta like when i got my apt, i paid up front 35 for background check, came back squeeky clean and couldnt get me in here fast enuff, why becuse on pay my rent on time or never been late in the last 6 years, but anyway everything right there on the driver app, clearly in black and white, just fill it in and best as you can rember, then when you go they tell this , i found something on your app, just be honset and tell em, the way i see it , if your not honset on your app, then how they know your gonna take a box off the dock, a wii player for example, i think if i go back out , id have at lest $350 in my pocket , plus a round trip bus ticket home , that will feed me for awhile, i seen drivers go in , flat broke , there beggin for smokes ,food ect, nope not get from me, then once on truck , your screwed again, why in log class they make you sign the paper , so you get paid for that last week , so lets say 39 hours class room time , minus 70 and so you have 31 too run on, so what i did was requast too go home while waiting for a trainer and do a reset.:biggrin_255:
