35 years ago it was easier. You asked how many valid licenses they had and the last place they worked. Of course there wasn't the litigation there is today.

like Wargames said, you could make a phone call and have a job. nowadays you gotta fill out an app on line or go thru a recruiting agency or a headhunter. there are still companies that you can apply directly, but they are becoming fewer and fewer

That's because there are fewer and fewer jobs . BFI's don't have new jobs - just same old jobs being temporarily filled by newbies that apply online or get shanghied by a recruiter .
It is impossible to get a job with a phone call anymore because of the thousands of CDL mill graduates forcing companies to refuse calls .

Truck company told me everything was set before I left, since I have a clean record, I figured I was ok. Took the 2 hour bus ride out for orientation on a Monday. Wednesday morning, they call me into the office. They had been trying to get a report from my former employer about an incident about 3 yrs prior when I got rear ended while driving a company vehicle. They had spent the morning on the phone getting the runaround. The truck company talked to 6 different people and no one would help.

I ended up taking a bus back that night (truck company paid for it). I spent the next day getting the runaround from my former employer. I finally found the right person. She handed me a file and said she didn't have time to look through paperwork, if I wanted the report, I had to look for it myself. It was right there, took me less than a minute.

I faxed it to the truck company, they put me back on a Greyhound and I started with my trainer the next day. My former employer cost me a week's pay and now my insurance starts a month later just because someone didn't feel like doing her job.

After 9/11 Gov. has more excuse to document every Citizen in the Country.
They go back 10+ yrs and build a file on you.

Part of the System now :)
I didn't realize the Trucking Ind. was so federalized. I sometimes wonder if maybe I should have just went LE anyways lol.

It's sad...in a way. But then again it can keep some people that have done some bad stuff out too.
I have a pretty clean BG. Couple of bad checks when I was around 20yrs old (34 now) and the DUI and a no insurance charge or two. A long time ago.
I passed the security clearance req's for the US Infantry when I was 24 and now for my current trucking job, but I know WTH is going on and why all this info is needed.

Just a number man... and a file now.

I have told my wife many times that I don't remember it being like this.
Even back in MY day you could see someone building a house or something, walk up to them, look em in the eye and ask if they need some good help buiding that there house, and get the job, or not.
But there was none of this "Well, we gotta go back 10yrs" (Because DHS says so) and you gotta pass this back ground check, and well, you can have never been busted for pissing behind your truck because that would put you under megan's law and now, a sex offender.

The world is getting crazier too.
    cheers
