If I knew then what I know now I would have gotten into working on a tug, I work for a co. That pulls the oils and water off of them and have talked to the crew and to others and done much research, the only reason I have not done it is because I cannot afford to be with out pay for a while. However some one young or with no bilss or family depending on the could. I'm not talking about a little tug I mean the ones with that bring barges up the coast from the gulf. Think about it these guys sail for 3 to 4 weeks all meals are provided, there is a cook on the boat and that is his only job, breakfast, lunch, and dinner, you then get a few weeks off, you only work half a year and once you are on board a few years you move up to be in charge of transfers and up to engineer or captin. After a few years you make well over $70,000. If you do not live near a port they fly you in, every area has a trainging facitility I know in the southeast it is norfolk, va. I just thought I would put this info out there cause I figured if you are willing go go away from home for a while there are also other jobs out there as well. I'm not saying anything bad about driving trucks now I have been since 99, but it just seems harder and harder to make money at it and I work with these guys often and have been told everything, given numbers and names to call. Just think of all your options because like many others have said a lot of these big companies will screw you in my starter days I was screwed around as well.

Hey, allright. First off, I know i need to pay my dues, So whats with everyone jumping and getting all riled up just from stating, i didnt like driving the school's volvo? My experiance with it, was that the shift patturn was too far apart to work comfortably, the steering was too loose to my likeing. yeah, sure, inside it was a nice truck and all that, but i dont care how nice the truck looks, if it doesnt seem to drive right! Wouldn't YOU want to avoid something, if you felt uncomfortable in it?

Usually just about every truck has its on ticks! Really not much you can do about except get used to it. I would advise you however to never complain to the company about the truck you are driving. Once they hear this they will keep you in it forever. Tell them you love it and you will be put in a new truck! Do your best to never show your attitude to the company or dispatcher. This is one of their biggest faux pax! They love the drivers that they don't hear anything from. There are too many drivers to take your place so don't screw it up! Good luck to you!

Not trying to jump on anybody but the driving school trucks are usually worn out, retired OTR trucks so you can't judge a brand of rig from just driving one of them.
You could take 10 brand new trucks and every one of them will drive a little different.
Just starting out you can't expect to get the newest best truck in the fleet.

I had a brand new truck straight off the assembly line and could not keep it out of the shop! We spent 3 months straight being broke down! The manufacturer eventually took the truck back and gave us another one. The same thing happened! It was unbelievable! So they took that truck back and needless to say we went to another manufacturer. The first manufacturer however did cut us a check for $23,000. It was a nice chunk of money but still did not compare to what we would have made driving. I would never ever by new truck again. The best trucks out there are the ones with around 200,000 on them. This is just enough time to have worked all the bugs out of them.

Hell, if i got the newest best truck in the fleet, where ever i ended up going to... Id have a few questions as to why.. something about that would seem strange to me. I want to say, i do appreceate everyones commenting to help me out. So if i should stay away from the mega carriers.. Where should i look to find the smaller, dare i even say, local, companies?
