Hey everyone. This is my first post. I am glad to be here.

I started out working a security job. My buddies wife has her cdl-a and was driving for panther going out three weeks at a time. She was having difficulty finding a good partner so it came up that I should get my cdl and drive with her. I went and got the books from the sec of state and started studying. Within a month I had my permit.

I went up north (where she lived) when she was back from a run and she trained me for my skills test. I passed on my first try.

I never went to school or paid for any training. I just took the tests and was able to pay for them and pass on my own, so far at least.

I have my cdl-b license with an air breaks endorsement. Currently, its the only endorsement I have.

After I put in my two weeks notice at my security job thinking I would be leaving with my buddies wife immediately -- She quits. She no longer wants to be gone for weeks at a time and is trying to find something local. So now, I am not working. And, I have to try and find a job with no experience and no partner to get me in.

Most of all, it seems that not going to school may have given me a disadvantage because of the experience you can prove from being in school and job placement.

I have been applying for jobs for the past two weeks on my own. I read on this forum that construction companies might be a good place to start.

Is school bus driving also a good place to get experience?
But then I have to get the endorsements and take another skills test. Sorta running short on cash for this.

I am not sure what my next step should be. Is there a better route I should be taking?

Where would you suggest I try and apply for a job with my cdl-b?

    Thanks for reading :)

What i am , i'm sorta in same boat, but i still have a dead end job, i stll have my cdl with air brakes on it, ,so what i'm gonna do is too be a temp in fill in shag driver for our warehouse here, that way i can brush up on my skills , such as dropping and hooking trls , backing ect,so i'm gonna hit all the warehouse here , but i think for anyboby getting into this , is too write a good resume and then once you get it all written out, go over too other side of desk as a boss and opean it up and ask yourself why would i hire this driver as you go over it,

Ok great thank you. I will go to warehouses too. Anything at this point really would be good for me.

I made a resume and I feel like it is where it should be as far as applying for a pizza place or a security job; that being where all of my experience is.

I don't have anything to put on my resume pertaining to a cdl except that I actually have it. No school or training to speak of. No job yet for experience. I submit it with my applications for cdl jobs. But, I know its not what they want to see for hiring.

get a non driving job and look for a driving job in the mean time. it could be harder than you think without any exp or look for the ###### hard working driving jobs (the ones that you dont just get to drive) to gain the exp to get a good one .this comes from oh so much exp trying to get one the same way. you guys got your cdl without schooling.which makes it very tough most companies want school unless there job is very hard work that even grads dont want!

I was also going say, if your willing too live out of a bunk house for 3 month's, i would check all the farmer's in the area, that's how i got started in trucking, no cdl back then, just get in a go, course it was only a 14 foot box grain truck, and backing grain wagons helped me alot, then i began the slow crawl up, first my learner permit for cars, then my driver lic, , then my chauffer permit, then my chauffer lic, then some brainer in congrass decide too make it a cdl name, so back too testing, got my cdl permit, then the reg cdl then i pass with haz mat , but thats was more trouble then it was worth,so let that go, then onto a regular trucking school over in cedar rapids, ia, just a few step's i went thru too get this far.

If you want to drive OTR you can go to a training co (Swift,England etc.)that will put you behind the wheel in a few months.Or you can pay out of pocket for a community college that offers CDLA training.Getting the CDL on your own while it saved you money really doesn't mean much today;the insurance cos want to see formal training.

OK,you've got your class B. To drive OTR, most of us have a class A. There is no airbrakae endorsement in Michigan for a class A. If that's on your license, it's a restriction, it has to be removed before you can legally drive a big truck with airbrakes.
If you want that class A, you just about have to go to school now a days, or get into megacarrier that will train you to get it. I am thinking correctly? You want a class A?
Where in "up north" Michigan were/are you?

Thank you for this suggestion. I will look into the colleges around here offering the CDLA program. I do want to go to college. I was thinking of going for a mechanic cert.

My buddies wife drove otr, she has a class a but was driving a straight truck. A class b was what she told me I would need to drive with her. So that is what I went to get.
You are right, I am thinking about getting my class a.
My buddies family recently moved back down to oakland county, but he was living up north in Alba, michigan.

Really, at this point. I would just like to find a job using my cdl for anything. I am done working security, y'know? If I have to go back, ok. But I really want to pursue this.
