OK so I left the oil field after a year and a half to pursue ltl and getting a linehaul job. I applied at a few different companies and only got a call back from Reddaway so I took the job and have been there for going on 3 weeks. I just got a call from Old Dominion. I don't know what to do. My first choice and company I've always wanted to work for was Old D so I'm just curious what you guys think and what you would do in my position.
I'm currently at .46cpm and $18hr fully paid bennies. 1 week vacation and a pay raise to full rate at .51cpm and $20 an hr after my 1 year anniversary. I'm 4th and last person on the extra board. All layover runs.
Old Dominion would start me off at .53cpm and $24hr 2 weeks vacation after a year I would pay for benefits and all turn runs. I'd be the only person on the extra board.
So.... any input would be great. I'm not a job hopper but would definitely consider it if offered a job.
Not sure what to do

When in doubt, punt? Kind of a tough call to make from my view point. I would at least look into ODie and see if you in fact are offered a job. If you aren't then your what to do question is answered.
BUT if you are offered the job, and this is where you want to be, unless you have a job hopping history, (which you say you don't have,) JUMP ON IT LIKE A DOG ON A BONE!
You only have three weeks in your current job. I don't see where they owe you much, or where you owe them much.
Good luck however this turns out!BIGreem1985, 40 ft trailing and TahoeTrucker Thank this. -
Old Dominion is what you seek, Old Dominion it shall be.

Here's my 2 cents coming from a former Reddaway driver now employed with OD...
Reddaway isn't a bad place to work, it's just a sinking ship in my opinion. The whole YRC buying them out has really screwed the company up. Equipment is old and outdated, 15% pay cut that IMO they'll never get back, non-existent pension, low pay etc, etc.
On the positive side, in line haul, you do get paid for everything you do when not driving, your insurance is fully paid, and for the most part, at least in my experience, it was a laid back work environment.
I've been with OD for 7 months, started P&D and have since moved over to line haul. Since I had previous LTL experience, I came in at .589 per mile... Top pay out west here is .615. Equipment is mostly all newer and well maintained, pay is great, benefits are pretty good, 401k matches at 6%, and we get a ton of discounts through companies such as, Ford, Dodge, Sprint Wireless, Verizon etc, etc.
On the negative side, which isn't really much to complain about, they are def more strict than Reddaway. You have to watch your speed, RPM's and your idle time as they do track this. Coming from Reddaway where they could care less how you drive the truck or how much you idle, this was a big adjustment for me. Besides this minor issue, I really have nothing but positive things to say about old dominion.
To sum it up man, take the job with OD and don't look back. They are on a mission to be the #1 LTL carrier out there, and so far, are doing a great job. I'm 30 years old, and God willing, I will retire from this company. If you have any other questions, let me know and I'll help you anyway I can. Good luck brother!Giuseppe Ventolucci, Bob Dobalina and TahoeTrucker Thank this. -
Thanks guys for all the help I really do appreciate it!

Follow your heart... It can only be wrong so many times !
No, seriously though, Reddaway is awesome, this is the company I wanted to work for and I'm happy here, but OD sounds like a better option (maybe?)TahoeTrucker Thanks this. -
Things are really laid back. Most of the guys I work with would never go to old d just because of all the extra b.s. they deal with. It's a hard decision but I might just stay with Reddaway and see how things go. Old D. Isn't going anywhere so I can always try again later. The position is in Cheyenne, WY so not my ideal place to be.

So what's wrong with Cheyenne? Other than way too windy, way too cold, way too much front range smog blown up out of the metro region...
