I'm pretty sure we had to double clutch in CA for the test. I don't see what the big deal is about it. You just double clutch for the test and do what you want afterwards.
I already have a steel plate and 6 screws in my left hip from when it was shattered and am told I will most likely need my first hip replacement at 35-40 years old so I float. It's the last place I need extra wear on my body.
NOT using a clutch when shifting gears on a manual trans?

When I road tested (Arizona) I asked the tester if I had to use the clutch or if I could float, his answer was "yes" I had to double clutch once or twice so he could see that I could do it and avoid failure of the test. Beyond that he did not care how I shifted.
Daily driving... I float all the time unless dead stopped. -

yeah... my trainer was like "when you start learning how to "slip shift" as he called it, you'll be alright"
I was a bit rusty, not having that many hours behind the wheel, and the ones I did, were always with a different truck, so I made a couple of mistakes and doubled through every gear lol.
