Did my pre-trip today and I noticed there is about a 6 inch scratch on the bottom side step on the passenger side. The paint looked like it peeled off pretty fresh. Weird thing is I don't remember hitting anything. Is it worth telling the company about it?

I definitely would even if it was your fault, so the company can have a record of it.

Usually cosmetic damage is no big deal, if i were you i wouldn't be scared of retaliation.

Step up and point out the damage even if you didn't think you did it. Are you the only one driving it? Next time and there will be a next time and you didn't do it. Tell the truth. Chance are the office will believe you. This guy doesn't lie.

Sounds like another "million mile accident free" driver strikes again!

Tell the office and be done with it.

It's very minor, they might actually have a little something to put on there to patch it or replace the affected part entirely.

What this will do is build up good will on your part with them. If you said nothing and the next driver reported it guess what? They haul YOU into the office for a hot light set of questions you probably have forget about by then. That does not look good on you.

It is a constant issue in this industry to pick up equipment already damaged. I didn't do it, so it gets reported. And written up etc.

If they really want to, they can find who had it before me. And go after him or her.

    shogun Thanks this.

I reported it to the safety department. They said there was some damage on that same side from the previous driver. I just got this truck this week. They thanked me for reporting it. Good thing eh?

He was referring to another driver hitting YOU, someone that is falsely claiming they have a million accident free miles.

It's very likely that someone else hit YOU when you were parked and in the sleeper berth. In the last three years that's happened to me four times. My top priority when finding a parking spot nowadays is to find a spot where I am least likely to get hit (like WAY back in a far corner as far from the travel center as possible with a clear 200' pull up ahead of me). No more parking in a tight spot close to the buffet.

Ah I see I misread that there. I been awake for 20ish hours now aha. I parked in an empty rest area last night, this damage wasn't there previously. If I hit something I would admit that I did. I'll mention that to the safety manager when I go back to the terminal.

x1Heavy, shogun and Lepton1 Thank this.

I would take a picture and send it to your safety manager if I were you, the first time you noticed it. That will show you are on top of your game with your inspections and honest. Document it. In fact any time I get in a new truck I often take pictures of preexisting damage and send that into our powers that be. CYA at all times. Cosmetic damage happens. If you find more than that (like a fender hanging off one bolt), then exercise stop work authority to get it fixed.
