Amen to that. There is something like 100 people a day moving into Nashville right now, mostly from high tax Northern and West Coast states. They move here to get away from the political climate they come from, but then try to change our state to be just like their old one.

Right after Tennessee switched to their new permitting system we got jammed up moving superloads through their state. We had been moving 19’6” wide loads through Tennessee for years with no troopers and no routing on the permit.

The new system came online with a load already on the road due to be on a boat in Georgia in a few days. Now all of a sudden we are routed, not a big deal. What was a big deal was we had to have troopers and it was a week wait for them. Turns out the man in charge of scheduling troopers as escorts was on vacation with no one covering for him! Ridiculous and it made our driver miss his ship and sit in Southaven, MS for a week.

The troopers showed up, actually did a level one, and escorted the load. After that load I know we requested an exemption from the trooper requirements. I think they wised up very quickly because I have never seen a trooper escorting a Load in Tennessee.

Georgia doesn’t inspect before the state patrol escorts a load, but I know Missouri and Ohio do for sure.

When they did the big changeover, it was a mess. They have straightened a lot of it out, and changed some of the original regulations.
In my experience, it’s now much easier to get superload permits in TN, it just cost a lot more than it used to. I talked to one of the head guys in the permit office (don’t recall his name), he said their goal was to make TN one of the easiest states to get permits in. They are having some growing pains though.

Since the change, they have let us move on some configurations that they wouldn’t even consider before. The old way, if something wasn’t written in the regs, they would just deny. Now, they will review unusual circumstances and deal with them on a case-by-case basis. Basically, they will let you get by with a bunch, as long as you can prove you won’t damage the roadway or bridges.
