We have a big job on Monday and found out late this afternoon that the power company is requiring FR masks. I'm sorry but this is just getting ridiculous now. It's hard enough to find plain old N95 masks let alone rated ones. We have resorted to cutting up spare uniform shirts. Are any of you guys dealing with this too?
Now they want Fire Resistant masks too?

They can hand them out then. Bill us if need be.
You can forget trying to buy a mask anywhere. And certainly not fire resistant.
Ive got a pair of fire masks that are only designed to prevent your face and airway from getting burned escaping a structure. Its so long I think the filters are bad. Probably pass out and burn up anyway. -
Does the F R tag have to be on the mask?. That stuff is expensive, I would hate to cut up a shirt to make one, maybe a t shirt

as i recall, anything required for safety items, the employer provides or at least reimburses the employee.
anything (as an example) i had a job that required steel toed boots? i handed over the sales receipt to the boss, and i got reimbursed.
fire resistant mask, sounds to me like the same set up the pit crews wear when fueling the cars.
Northeasterner and AM14 Thank this. -

Refineries and similar Petroleum processing facilities have long been big on NOMEX clothing.
A few years ago I had an unit delivering sulfuric acid to the refinery in Philadelphia that just exploded and burned.
The hose burst and burned their employee who was wearing full nomex and 'just' and acid resistant jacket, hard hat and face shield.
He was walking past the rear of the pressurized trailer when a small split developed and the acid shot out knocking off his hard hat.
He suffered severe burns to the back of his neck AND on his butt where the acid ran of the bottom of the acid resistant jacket and tore right through the nomex...
the PPE training posters in the refinery control room only 'required' a full acid suit for HF acid but not the sulfuric or hydrochloiric...
That plant was SO old that, at that time, some locations had big galvanized stock water troughs instead of safety showers. their training wasn't too complete as this guy wasn't trained enough to remember to strip before diving into the water tub trapping the acid against his skin.
Remember High School Chem class; "always add acid to water NEVER water to acid"...
Dupont's reps estimated the exothermic reaction of the water meeting the acid inside his jacket was well over 400 degrees. He needed skin grafts.Northeasterner, tscottme, AM14 and 1 other person Thank this.
