    After having a Garmin for a few years (non truck specific) I bought a Rand McNally TND 510 Friday before last because the Garmin quit working. I kept the Rand McNally for a week as I tried my best to like it but ended up returning it and going with the Nuvi 465LMT.

    The Rand McNally has alot of features that I like but the maps were way out of date. I updated the maps to no avail. My M-I-L's neighborhood is over 5 years old but even after the update it's no where to be found. Found the same problem with 2 or 3 of my stops.

    Rand McNally pros:

    * ability to save locations in alphabetical order as well as in "groups"
    * alerts such as speed limits changes, toll booth ahead, sharp curve and driving faster than the posted speed limit.
    * loud speaker
    * large screen
    * lane assist

    Rand McNally cons:

    * predictive spelling - finding a new location was very cumbersome
    * out of date maps
    * seemed to only show speed limits on interstates
    * "real time" traffic updates after buying a receiver and I believe that there is a monthly fee

    Nuvi pros:

    * up to date maps
    * easy to use
    * lane assist although it could use some improvement
    * "real time" traffic updates included

    Nuvi cons:

    * speaker not very loud
    * no alerts to speed, curves, toll booths, etc
    * cant save locations in alphabetical order

    I have never tried contacting Garmin customer support but I did email Rand McNally asking how often they update the maps. Its been almost a week and still no reply.

    Well if you found the Electronic Connection then you have also seen the threads for support of the Rand McNally.

    Actually I havent seen them. I dont get on here that often and when I do I normally have a particular area that I go to and its not here.

    If Rand McNally would had answered my email and if the was a fix for my missing locations I would had sure kept the 510. But I am big on customer service and they had more than enough time to respond to my questions.

    That issue is being addressed. I am sorry you returned your 510. If you had given me the addresses I could have send them to Rand so we could research them. Be aware not all maps are 100% correct. If the system somehow dropped the "ball" in getting the data to the map companies then the addresses could be missing. I have seen business that have been around for 30 years not be in the map database.

    thanks,
    mark

    I had a horrible experience with the Rand. I sent it back over a year ago, Rand McNally has never returned it to me, never contacted me about it and I really don't care. It was such an unmitigated POS that if I did get it back I would just find someone I really hate and give it to them as a christmas present. My Garmin isn't perfect, just vastly superior to the Rand in every way.

    I have a dezl 560. Louder speaker, bigger display. The rand McNally has more features, but in the end isn't dependable. Garmin has a lot to catch up with when it comes to the features factor, but it works, doesn't crash and in my opinion is a better unit with better customer care.

    Garmin and Rand McNally use exactly the same source for street detail -Navteq, so they should have exactly the same streets. Garmin uses Navteq for truck restrictions also, whereas Rand has its own data for truck restrictions which it adds on top, since that is what they specialize in. It sounds like your unit needed a map update to show the same data as the Garmin.

    Have you called them in regards to this? What RMA # was it shipped under? I cannot understand that if you send it in and it a like item was not returned that the customer would after x months call Rand Support so they could see what happend.

    It could very well have shipped and have gotten lost in transit.

    Thanks,
    Mark
