Since I started using the Garmin it has found every address so far. I believe that I even tried my M-I-L address and it pulled it up.

I understand that not every street will be in the system and I also understand that it wont be 100% accurate. But the 510 was missing too many searches for it to be useful in my opinion.

Her address is in the 100 block of Rockhouse Rd 76008 if you want to send that to them. None of that neighborhood was in the update. It pulls up fine on Google Maps although they call it Rockhouse Drive instead of Road.

Rand and Garmin get the base maps from the same place. So if you are running the same version of maps at the time, then you will get the same results.

Here is that residential area in Aledo as an example as seen on latest mapsets available for Garmin 560, Rand, and PC Miler.

Since NavTeq doesn't have that neighborhood, neither will Rand or Garmin. PC Miler does not get the maps from the same place as Rand and Garmin and they have this one. But there are other scenarios where the situation will be the other way around.

Google has it as "Rockhouse Drive"
Mapquest has it as "Rockhouse Drive"
Bing Maps never heard of the entire neighborhood either.

If the map versions are the same, a Garmin 560 and a Rand 510 will be the same. The features and truck routes are vastly different at times, but the maps will be the same.

I have a Rand 720 TND and it works like a champ! Never had any issues with it. Had it for 7 months and It always gets me where I need to go without any problems!

All that I know is I bought the 510, updated it and tried to load her address in. It couldnt find it. I tried to update again but it told me that I had the latest update.

I got the 465 and updated it. Searched for her address and it pulled it up with no problem.

I dont know who makes the maps or whatever but all I know is the Garmin found it while the Rand couldnt.

Also today I ran TX 161 from TX 114 to I-20 in Dallas. The stretch from I-20 to I-30 is brand new. It only opened about a month ago. The road showed up on the Garmin. I was only running a map and didnt do a search.

I guess that my point is, the Garmin shows her address to a house that is about 3 years old and it also shows a road that has been open a month. I wasnt that lucky with the Rand.

The Rand seems to have some nice features that I really like but in my opinion the Garmin gets me where I need to go better than the Rand.

Rand and Garmin may use the same supplier for base data, but they are certainly not equal.

Garmin updates quarterly for one thing. They seem to have the most current maps available for a GPS unit.

You are correct in that they update quarterly and yearly, Rand updates yearly currently. Rand does spend the extra time in verifing and researching the yearly update before it is released to the public.

Any Tell Rand you submit is verified on the yearly update as well as other items that are checked. It is a drawn out process to ensure the public has the most correct map data.

A lot of other factors go into play also that I cannot mention outside of Rand.

    Thanks,
    mark

My 720 will be at my house this afternoon. Unfortunately, I won't be. But I'll put her to work and keep ya updated as to how things pan out. I'm looking forward to it.

My refurbed 500 still performs well, in spite of not having the most current maps. It still freezes up once in a while, but I can almost predict when it'll happen...never while rolling.

    Weezel see, won't we?
