Going to be off loading in Long Island on Monday. Looking at a machine picking not even 1 mi from my delivery. Its going to Maine.
If this was anywhere else I would have booked this already because the rate is excellent,.. but not having ever done an O/S through the boro's, there is a gray area I'm not sure about and asking you experts for your knowledge base.
The machine will be 10'5 wide, 9'10 tall. 44k lbs. Height and weight are not an issue for me. How ever,.. its my understanding that in order to do over 10' wide through NYC this can only be done late at night. And not sure if this will need an escort or not.
Last time I tried to get permits for upstate new york they were talking like 3 days. I ended up getting a thru-way permit in under an hour and took a chance going the 6 miles between shipper and toll road.
Being NYC,.. I dont want to take any chances and need to know what I would be up against. Anyone done any over size through NYC?
EDIT:
Are there any Ferry services from eastern Long Island over to say CT or RI? If so how much?
EDIT#2
Found a ferry service from Orient point. $75 one way. Thats doable.
Thanks,
Hurst

You'll need an escort if over 65' until you get to a certain road on 95N. If over 55', you'll need an inbound and outbound permit as well. It takes 2 business days for
NYC permit. I prefer to route myself onto the thruway 95-287-87 then hit 90. A little more expensive, but a lot less hassle. 24 hour running and CT permit routes suck.Hurst Thanks this. -
Appreciate the info.
It was paying $3000 to go roughly 350 mi up into Maine. Sounded good at first.
The few times I've done over size in the new england area have left such a distaste with me. I'll leave it for the experts who would be better suited to handle this than me.
My guess is right now there is a company driver thats going to sit until monday or tuesday before he gets the permits needed to move this thing. My plan was to head east over to Orient Point and catch a ferry. When I called and informed them what my dimensions and weight would be,. they were like uh,.. no. Thats that. I just didnt see enough profit to sit for 4 - 5 days for only $3000.
As luck would have it, I got a call from another broker and took his load for monday instead.

Appreciate the info sir. I've been using Mercury permit services,.. well,..because thats who my carrier had been using and after calling around I didnt find anyone offering anything better.
But when an old hand such as yourself gives me a leg up,.. I never dismiss it. Definitely saving that for next time.
