Guys need some help. I've been in trucking for 10 years (driver 5, dispatcher, 2, and sales 3). I enjoy my current sales job (public job), but it's time to start another business (i have a small farm business for 20+years). This is all local freight. None over 300 miles loaded. This is hazmat tanker, using a dedicated tanker only in NC and SC (potentially others later). I would have 50% deadhead. The company I work for is 95% petroleum and is not interested.

I've read and seen the basics for acquiring your own authority. I understand this. But I need help understanding the Hazmat side. The company I currently work for is Hazmat, but I can't really dig in too deep without raising suspicion. As far as loading/unloading of product, that's not a problem. I already have all required info regarding this. It's just the Government side I need help on.

I have insurance quotes which didn't surprise me. All insurance approx. $25K per year.

Where I'm lost is what all is needed to haul hazmat?

I know I have to be:

    Hazmat Registered
    Hazmat Loading/Unloading Procedure

What else am I missing? The PHMSA website is kind of confusing. Thanks in advance guys.

Depending on what your hauling you will need to raise your insurance for spill clean up.. god forbid, alot of states you need to have your haz mat permits. Then you had best be on top of all of the laws for hazmat. The fines are very very expensive. I don't want to discourage you , but big companies have a safety man that is kept up on all new and existing laws that drivers can call for any questions about it. Best of luck but unless it is a minor haz mat you really might want to check it our fully first and charge acordingly.

Thanks for the reply. The product is fairly safe. Similar to bleach. The insurance quote is for 5 million liability. I've seen what fuel clean ups can cost. This product is a lot safer. It's corrosive, not flammable.

i think the rates are pretty attractive. The company would like an independent to pull the freight. They have already been with several small fleets (10-50) trucks. They don't like the non personal service. With the load history I've been provided, I'll gross $4-5k per week driving approx 2k miles. Due to loading restrictions, loading and delivery is M-F only. So no weekend work. Plus I'll be home 2-3 nights per week.

There are some retired highway patrolmen that were commercial cops, and start up a business just for hazmat and small companies.you don't accually hire them but for consulting and answer any question. As every dot needs to be crossed. Best of luck with your ventures in this. You can use this retired officer for your drug officer, ask any questions about hazmat or other problems and if the highway patrol knows you are using him.. They just might look at that flock of birds, when you go by. You might try asking somebody at the local highway patrol office if he know anybody that does this.. And my last posting I said tickets can be pricey.. 25 years ago I knew a guy that had the placards taped to his load.. Started to rain.. One washed off. Got ticket.. They tried to charge him 2,400 bucks.. He told judge what happened.. Thrown out. Good luck!

I think the rate is too cheap personally. There are very few small companies with hazmat. Charge accordingly. I would call NC and SC motor carrier services to find out what state specific items you'd need. OOIDA can probably answer most of the federal question. It will be the best $45 you ever spent.

OOIDA has some of the best insurance rates that I found. Plus you don't have to come up with that 20 % down.. They just require the first month and pay every month. Not the 10 month pay like other insurance companies. Talk to them about the different options that you have.
